Offer Description

Open to unconventional approaches in research and teaching, the University of Bremen has retained its character as a place for closely connecting people and ideas since its foundation in 1971. We combine exceptional performance and innovative potential in a broad spectrum of subjects. As an ambitious research university, we stand for research-based learning approaches and a pronounced interdisciplinary orientation. We actively pursue international scientific cooperation in a spirit of global partnership.

Today, around 23,000 people learn, teach, research and work on our international campus. In research and teaching, administration and operations, we are strongly committed to the goals of sustainability, climate justice and climate neutrality. Our Bremen spirit is expressed in the courage to explore new things in cooperation, respect and appreciation for each other. With our study and research profile as well as with our cooperation within the European YUFE network, we assume social responsibility in the region, in Europe and in the world.

At the University of Bremen, the Institute for Art History – Film Studies – Art Education / Institut für Kunstwissenschaft – Filmwissenschaft – Kunstpädagogik (IKFK), at Faculty 9 Cultural Studies has a vacancy for a permanent professorship at the earliest possible date:

Tenure-Track Professor (f/m/x)

with tenure track after W2

(Salary Level W1)

For the subject area

Art Studies and Aesthetic Theory
Reference number: JP152/24

Initially, the professorship will run for a period of three years, but is to be extended for a further three years after an interim evaluation with an orientation character. Subject to a positive evaluation after six years at the latest, the appointment will change to a lifetime professorship (W2). To allow sufficient time for your scientific development, the extent of teaching duties will increase steadily over time.

The scholar should innovatively represent and further develop the field of art studies and aesthetic theory with a focus on recent art history in a cultural studies perspective in research and teaching. An integrative understanding of art studies and aesthetic theory in the context of interdisciplinary cooperation is expected.

A high-profile focus of work in the field of modern art history (dissertation) is a prerequisite. During the tenure phase this is to be complemented by the development of a second focus (second book or habilitation-equivalent achievements), ideally with desirable connections to the latest art history, visual culture and gender research at the level of the current state of research. Alternatively, qualified applicants may develop a second focus in the field of modern art history during the junior professorship. An integration into the University’s cooperation with the Mariann Steegmann Institut – Kunst & Gender with its research fields on spatial and visual relations is expressly expected.

In teaching, the position holder will represent the field of art studies and aesthetic theory in the future in the subject-specific and integrated academic study tracks in the Bachelor's and Master's programs and after successful evaluation in the entire programme. In the future, participation in the planned interdisciplinary English-language BA course in “Environmental Humanities” in the field of Cultural Studies is also expected. A willingness to engage in research-based studies is expected.

The ability to offer courses in German and English is also a prerequisite and may be acquired during the tenure phase up to the interim evaluation (language requirement C1 for German). Willingness to participate in academic self-administration of the Department of Cultural Studies is required.

Cooperation with art museums and collections of the Hanseatic City of Bremen and the wider region is desirable. Active participation in internationalization and international networking, as well as the willingness to acquire third-party funding for research projects is required.

The University of Bremen offers a pleasant, collegial working atmosphere and a vivid scientific environment furthering both intra- and interdisciplinary cooperation.

In addition to fulfilling the general appointment requirements under civil service law, the prerequisites for employment include a relevant academic university or college degree in art studies or an equivalent, subject-relevant degree and a particular aptitude for scientific work, proven by a relevant high-ranking doctorate in the subject area. We expect pedagogical aptitude and didactic commitment as well as a willingness to undergo further training in higher education didactics. Experience in academic self-administration is desirable.

Tenure-track professors are relieved of some of their teaching duties at the beginning of their employment in order to be able to develop their academic profile. The appointment is based on §§ 18, 18a BremHG and § 117 BremBG. According to these, the doctoral and employment phases together should not have lasted more than six years. Applicants who have already completed their doctorate in Bremen must have changed universities after completing their doctorate or have worked outside the University of Bremen for at least two years.

The University of Bremen is committed to increasing the number of women in academia. Among others, it has received several awards in DFG programs on gender equality. We expressly welcome applications from academics with a migration background as well as applications from abroad. Priority will be given to applicants with severe disabilities who display the same professional and personal qualifications.

The university distinguishes itself by offering needs-oriented career and personnel development pathways for academic executives. It supports newly appointed staff with a variety of services such as the Welcome Center, comprehensive childcare services, and the professional integration of partners.
