At the University of Greifswald’s Department of Philosophy, Chair of Practical Philosophy, in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, there is a job vacancy expected to be available from 1 September 2024, subject to budgetary regulations, for a full-time

Teaching and Research Assistant
(akademische*r Rätin*Rat).

The position on offer is permanent and suitable for part-time employment.

The post has been rated with pay grade A13. If the successful candidate is able to fulfil the requirements pursuant to civil service law, the University will employ them as a civil servant in higher service (zweites Einstiegsamt der Laufbahngruppe 2) with a specialisation in research. Otherwise, they shall be employed as a public employee in accordance with pay group 13 TV-L Wissenschaft.

Job Description:

  • Academic tasks mainly in the field of teaching according to the state regulations LVVO M-V (currently planned: 14 weekly teaching hours during the lecture periods)
  • Teaching obligations in the field of philosophy with a focus on the history of philosophy
  • Assisting with examinations
  • Supervision of students
  • Participation in the coordination of teaching

Job requirements:

  • Advanced university degree (Erstes Staatsexamen, Master’s or equivalent) in philosophy
  • This civil service post will only be conferred if the successful candidate is qualified to serve as a civil servant in higher service, performing academic duties. If they are unable to provide the required professional qualifications for higher service, an advanced university degree (Erstes Staatsexamen, Master’s or equivalent in philosophy) and at least two years and six months of full-time employment in a relevant field can also be recognised as equivalent professional qualification. The details are defined in § 14(4) Landesbeamtengesetz - LBG M-V (State Civil Service Act) and § 12 Allgemeine Laufbahnverordnung - ALVO M-V (General Career Path Ordinance for Civil Servants).

Further knowledge and skills that will play an important role in the filling of this post in higher civil service are:

  • Doctorate in philosophy
  • Experience in academic teaching and holding examinations in the field of philosophy and/or the history of philosophy
  • Broad and solid knowledge of the fields, positions and methods of philosophy with a focus on the history of philosophy
  • Good German and English language skills (with the ability to teach in at least one of the languages from the start of employment and in both languages from the third semester at the latest)

Desirable:

  • Experience in supervising and advising students
  • Expertise in the field of ancient philosophy
  • Research skills, documented by relevant publications
  • Interest in further development of professional and teaching skills
  • Cooperative attitude and social skills
  • Experience in academic self-governance
