Student Assistant "Planning, Design, and Construction of a Molten Salt Test Facility"

Updated: about 1 month ago
Location: Freiburg im Breisgau, BADEN W RTTEMBERG

The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg is the largest solar research institute in Europe. Our approximately 1,400 employees work towards a sustainable, economical, safe and socially just energy supply system based on renewable energies. We contribute to this with our research focus on energy supply, energy distribution, energy storage and energy use. Through outstanding research results, successful industrial projects, company spin-offs and global cooperation, we are shaping the sustainable transformation of the energy system.

In our department, we offer R&D services for the scientific evaluation and optimisation of climate-neutral industrial processes and high-temperature storage systems. Storage technologies are the central element of the energy transition. For specific preliminary investigations and component developments, we work with experimental setups in the laboratory with capacity of up to 1 MW, always with the aim of implementation at the end user. We develop and evaluate innovative high-temperature storage systems based on molten salt and technologies for direct electrical heating using simulation and experimental tests and optimise their integration into industrial and power plant processes.

As part of an ongoing research project, an innovative electric heater is being developed that is suitable for thermal outputs of up to 100 MW. A prototype with a reduced size of 1 MW is being produced for this purpose. The prototype will then be tested in a new molten salt test facility at Fraunhofer ISE in Freiburg.

For our department "High Temperature Solar Thermal Energy and Industrial Processes" we are looking for a Student Assistant to start by 01.05.2024 or later.

What you will do

  • You will work with our team of scientists and engineers to design a relatively large test facility.
  • You will support the development of a control concept for the test facility.
  • You will support the development of safety measures and risk assessment.
  • You will assist in the design and selection of the components of the molten salt loop such as storage tank, pump and control valves and help with tendering and ordering.
  • You will support the inspection and approval of existing components.

What you bring to the table

  • You are studying mechanical engineering, process engineering, energy technology, physics, environmental sciences or a similar field of studies.
  • You are interested in the decarbonisation of energy and industrial processes.
  • You have experience in experimental work, handling tools and measurement technology.
  • You have previous knowledge of mechanics, materials science, thermodynamics and fluid mechanics.
  • You are looking for a field of activity as a student assistant in which you can creatively apply and expand the knowledge you have acquired during your studies.
  • You feel comfortable in a dynamic environment and enjoy taking on new challenges.
  • You can work both in a team and independently on assigned tasks.
