Student Assistant/Master Thesis in the Field of Quantum Technology

Updated: 7 days ago
Location: Freiburg im Breisgau, BADEN W RTTEMBERG

The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics IAF is one of the world's leading research institutes in the fields of III/V semiconductors and synthetic diamond. Together with our partners from industry and science, we research and develop electronic, optoelectronic and quantum technological components and systems. The focus is on research and development for applications in the areas of security, health, energy, information and communication.
In the field of quantum technology, the institute is working on the realization of a quantum computer based on colour centres in diamonds. Here, nitrogen-vacancy centres (NV) in diamond are used to generate qubits. Using microwave CVD, NV centres are generated by nitrogen doping during diamond growth and characterized on site at the institute with regard to their spin properties using the existing measurement setups. In addition to quantum computing, NV centres in diamond are also used in quantum sensing. Depending on interest and previous knowledge, various activities in the field of spin experiments with NV centres or in spin characterization are envisaged as part of the position. A continuation of the topic or a direct start in a Bachelor/Master thesis are possible.

What you will do

  • Setup & operation of measurement setups to characterize the spin properties of NV centres in diamond
  • Depending on previous knowledge, programming or further development of Python-based software control
  • Carrying out service measurements in an interdisciplinary environment
  • Documentation & processing of measurement results

What you bring to the table

  • You are a registered student in the field of physics, microsystems technology, computer science or a comparable subject.
  • You have good programming skills in Python.
  • You have good language skills in German and English.
  • You enjoy experimental and scientific work.
  • You are a team player, open-minded and motivated to work independently and purposefully.

What you can expect

  • An open and team-oriented corporate culture that offers you the opportunity to contribute your own ideas
  • Diverse and exciting tasks in the environment of an internationally renowned research institution
  • Modern laboratory equipment in a new laboratory building
  • On-site programming support from experts
  • Collaboration in an interdisciplinary team, including working on current projects with clear objectives
  • Room for independent work and creative participation
  • Flexible time management by arrangement with a weekly working time of 10-15 hours. An increase in hours during the semester break is possible

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. The position is initially limited to 6 months.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
