Student Assistant (m/f/d): Development of AI-supported software solutions in the automotive sector

Updated: about 2 months ago
Location: Paderborn, NORDRHEIN WESTFALEN

Welcome to the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechatronic Design IEM!
We are located on the Zukunftsmeile in Paderborn and are actively shaping the next generation of innovations. Our focus: practical research for mechanical engineering, automotive industry and related sectors. We develop intelligent products, production systems, services and software applications.

The department "Digital Engineering" deals with the central question of how complex systems can be developed in a data-driven and efficient manner. In addition to enhancing performance in engineering through the formal application of Model-Based Systems Engineering, we conduct research on the networking and management of product data using concepts such as the Digital Twin. Another focus is on socio-technical human-machine interaction using Augmented and Virtual Reality. Particularly in the field of Artificial Intelligence, we see great potential and are convinced that this topic will be central in the data-driven engineering of tomorrow.

What you will do

  • Implementation of software components
  • Use of technologies such as RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation), fine-tuning of language models and other relevant AI techniques
  • Developing and programming interfaces to other MBSE tools to ensure seamless integration and data communication

What you bring to the table

  • Enrolled master’s student (m/f/d) in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering or a related field of study
  • Understanding of the basic principles behind machine learning and artificial intelligence
  • Knowledge of programming and software development, with a specific focus on Large Language Models (LLMs) and their application in practice
  • Knowledge of RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation), fine-tuning of language models is an advantage
  • A strong interest in the automotive industry and the application of AI, especially LLMs, to solve complex problems and improve processes
  • Independent working style, ability to work in a team and a high motivation to familiarize yourself with new technologies and develop innovative solutions

What you can expect

  • A position where you can drive the innovations of tomorrow
  • A pronounced team culture with flat hierarchies is a given for us. That means: high appreciation and trust, a pleasant working atmosphere, shared lunches, and creative colleagues
  • The opportunity to take on responsibility and participate in subprojects
  • Flexible working hours and vacation aligned with semester schedules
  • The opportunity for a home office arrangement, taking into account your professional and personal challenges
  • Attractive employee discounts (Fraunhofer Corporate Benefits) for a wide selection of attractive brands

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process.
