The Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials IFAM is one of Europe's most important independent research institutes in the fields of »shaping and functional materials« as well as »adhesive bonding technology and surfaces«. The department Adhesion and Interfaces at Fraunhofer IFAM in Bremen, Germany, is looking for student support on various topics in the context of additive manufacturing (AM) and/or surface texture characterisation. Please state in your application whether you are applying for an internship, a thesis or a student assistant position.

AVAILABLE ASSIGNMENTS

  • Bachelor thesis / Internship/ Student assistant assignment:
    Design and manufacturing of a macroscopic demonstrator using stereolithography (SLA) to visualise typical microscopic surface features and properties resulting from metal powder bed fusion (PBF)  
  • Bachelor thesis / Master thesis/ Internship/ Student assistant assignment:
    Investigation of image-based approaches to the characterisation of near-surface nitriding heat treatment effects on metal components
  • Master thesis / Internship/ Student assistant assignment:
    Investigation of influence of laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) processing parameters (contour scan) on microstructural properties and resulting crack initiation behaviour under cyclic loading for AlSi7Mg0.6 material 
  • Master thesis / Internship/ Student assistant assignment:
    Adaption of existing fatigue prediction models using alternative standard and non-standard texture parameters for as-built laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) surfaces, including comparison with testing results for AlSi7Mg0.6 material
  • What you will do

    • Surface texture characterisation and imaging with various optical microscopy methods
    • Evaluation of numerical testing data and image data
    • Data processing, modelling, and correlation
    • Documentation and presentation of your work 
    • Discussion of your results with experts in the respective fields

    What you bring to the table

    • Enrolled student in Production Engineering/Aerospace Engineering/ Mechanical Engineering/ Materials Science or similar
    • Interest in expanding your knowledge on metal additive manufacturing (specifically LPBF), microstructure of metals, mechanical behaviour or heat treatment (depending on assignment)
    • Ability to organise and document your work independently (according to your level of study progress)
    • Professional working proficiency (oral and written) in either English (preferred) or German
