The Heidelberg Luminescence Laboratory (heiLUM) at the Institute of Geography opens a temporary position (TV-L, E13 100 %) to be filled as soon as possible for three years (36 months).

Software Research Engineer (f/m/d)

Background:

Reproducible science requires access to suitable and transparent research software. In the field of luminescence-based chronology, the statistical programming environment R has gained popularity through various open-source software packages, such as ‘Luminescence’. To mature the development process of ‘Luminescence’, improve its usability and pass knowledge to younger researchers, the DFG has selected a joint funding application of Heidelberg University and the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen supported by other European universities in the framework of the call Research Software – Quality Assured and Re-usable.

Your tasks:

As a successful candidate, you will join the heiLUM team as a Lead Software Research Engineer to work on the DFG project “REPLAY: REProducible Luminescence Data AnalYses”. After a brief training period, you will lead the development of ‘Luminescence’ and the to-be-designed REPLAY system. You will closely work with our partners at the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen and other European partners. As part of a scientific community, beyond coding, you will participate in dissemination activities, such as workshop presentations, international conference contributions and scientific manuscripts.

Your profile:

You are a committed software developer, research engineer or data scientist. You hold a PhD in natural science or a master’s degree with at least three years of job experience in relevant fields.

You are virtuous in R and git and can prove it. You know JavaScript and the basics of C or C++. You are familiar with maintaining open-source software development and graphical user interface design. Experience in other tools such as CSS, Java, Python, PHP, XML, Rust, and scientific database design is a plus. Depending on your educational background, you have practical expertise in statistical data analysis or may acquire such knowledge in due time. You are a team player who likes to actively engage with internal and external collaboration partners. Fluent knowledge of English in written and oral form (equivalent CEFR level C1 or better) is mandatory. Knowledge of German is not obligatory for applicants but is beneficial for handling administrative issues.

We are offering:

An attractive work environment in Germany′s oldest university with the possibility to work partly from home embedded in a thriving team of scientists. Employment as a public servant (German public salary scale TV-L E13) with an additional budget, e.g., for conference participation and administrative support for international applicants through the Welcome Center of Heidelberg University and DFG support for gender equality measures.

We are happy to get to know you better during a video job interview. To apply, please send your application in a single PDF (max. 6 MB) no later than 2024-04-30 to [email protected] . Beyond typical documents, such as a cover letter, a CV and education certificates, we expect proof of past software projects (e. g., links to GitHub repositories or similar).

If you have questions, please contact Dr Sebastian Kreutzer ([email protected] ).
