European XFEL is an international non-profit company located in the Hamburg area in Germany. It operates a 3.4 km-long X-ray laser, which produces X-rays of unique quality for studies in physics, chemistry, the life sciences, materials research and other disciplines. In the context of the PaNOSC (Photon and Neutron Open Science Cloud) project which is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement number 823852) we are looking for a
The position
We invite applications from scientists with experience in software engineering as well as computer scientists with keen interest in working in a scientific environment.The main focus of the position is to co-develop and maintain cloud-based solutions for database searches, remote data-access/download and data analysis in virtualized software environments.
As part of the data analysis group you will:
- work together with the European XFEL IT and data management team on the improvement of existing implementations, as well new approaches, for remote computation
- within the scope of the PaNOSC project, collaborate with software developers from the European photon and neutron science community on the transfer of cloud technologies between facilities
- collect data analysis use-cases from scientists and extract requirements for the integration of data processing software into containerized software environments on the cloud infrastructure
- support simulation software developers with the embedding of their tools into the data analysis workflows
Requirements
- MSc or PhD in Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, or similar field
- Programming experience, ideally within a scientific context
- Proven experience with web development or web administration
- Good knowledge of Python and at least one other programming language
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- Strong oral and written English skills (language of work is English)
The following are considered as assets:
- Knowledge about cloud infrastructure (OpenStack, Kubernetes etc.) and containerization (Docker etc.)
- Experience with web front-end development (JS, React, Angular etc.)
- Knowledge about web authentication (OpenID connect, Keycloak etc.)
- Experience with data base management and ETL processes
- Knowledge about the Jupyter ecosystem
- Experience with git or similar version control system
- Experience with software testing and continuous integration
- Experience with hdf5 and data analysis/data science/data analytics

Salary and benefits are similar to those of public service organizations in Germany.
