Senior Earth System scientist position (m/f/d)
(Position number: 47-2023 Senior Scientist Earth System)

in the field of Earth System modeling, starting as soon as possible.

The position can be filled as a multi-year tenure-track or permanent employment, depending on the candidate’s qualifications (excellent track record in relevant publications, leadership skills and acquisition of extramural research funding). Remuneration is in accordance with the German public tariff scheme (TV-L Brandenburg), salary group up to E 14. This is a full-time position with a weekly working time of 40 hours.
We are open to consider candidates on a senior level with an interest in creatively shaping the future of our unique Earth System model development in coming years, and hopefully longer term. The candidate will contribute to quantifying the safe operating space for humanity and developing long-term scenarios of Earth system state in the Anthropocene.

Key responsibilities:
The candidate is expected to play a leading role in advancing our ocean, atmosphere, biosphere and/or ice modelling capabilities within our integrated Earth System modelling framework POEM. The
Candidate is also expected to advance our understanding of past, present and future climate change by contributing to one or more of our key research areas focusing on tipping points, planetary boundaries, extreme events and interactions with the land and marine biosphere as well as the anthroposphere.

Requirements:
We require a PhD in a relevant subject area, numerical modelling experience and a good scientific publication record appropriate for the level of experience. Ideally, you also have initial experience in leading teams or working groups.

We expect:

  • a solid understanding of Earth System dynamics
  • advanced skills in scientific modelling and computing
  • very good communication and motivation skills when working with others the conception and writing of research papers and funding proposals structured and goal-oriented thinking
  • capacity to familiarise yourself quickly with new topics creativity and openness to new approaches
  • a high level of competence in oral and written English
  • reliability, the ability to cope with the challenges of research environments, and a high level of motivation
  • willingness to travel for work (project meetings, workshops etc.) and take part in further training willingness to lead a research group
  • organisational talent.
