The Leibniz-Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW) offers a part time fixed term
Scientist position (data analysis of microbial communities) (m/f/d)
starting on January 18t, 2021 (20 hrs/week) within the department of Biological Oceanography. The position is assigned to the project "DAM pilot mission - MGF-Ostsee: Conflicts of the exclusion of mobile bottom fishing in marine protected areas". The payment will be EG13 according to the German TV-L. The contract duration is limited to 26 months, but the position can also be filled differently (e.g. for 17 months 30 hrs/week) within the given project framework.
The IOW is an independent institute of the Leibniz Society with a research emphasis on coastal and marginal seas in general and the Baltic Sea in particular. The scientists of the four departments (Physical Oceanography and Instrumentation, Marine Chemistry, Biological Oceanography and Marine Geology) are working interdisciplinary within a common research program and with the support of a special working group for the development of new technologies.
In the interdisciplinary MGF-Ostsee project, funded by the German Alliance for Marine Research (DAM), a consortium of scientists from seven German institutes investigate the development of benthic organism communities, sediment structures and material flows in the Natura 2000 areas in the EEZ of the Baltic Sea after the exclusion of the mobile bottom fishing. The advertised position is part of the Microbial Ecology working group (head: Prof. K. Jürgens).
The major task of this position is the analysis of DNA sequence data (metagenomics, taxonomic marker genes) in order to assess the composition and function of microbial communities (prokaryotes and microbial eukaryotes) in Baltic Sea sediments.
- good to very good degree (MSc) and/or PhD in natural science (biology, bioinformatics, etc.)
- Knowledge and experience in the analysis of metagenomes (including assembly from short reads and annotation of functional genes), "amplicon sequencing" data, and/or genome analyses
- Knowledge in statistical analyses of sequence and environmental data (e.g., in R)
- Good English speaking and writing abilities
We encourage scientist to apply who have recently finished their studies with excellent results and who fulfill the qualifications listed above.
Applicants are asked to send their complete documents (cover letter, curriculum vitae, copies of certificates, description of relevant activities and experiences, any certificates, publications, project reports, references) stating the code Bio 14/2020, by December 14, 2020 to bewerbung.biologie(at)io-warnemuende.de or

The Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research offers a varied work in the immediate vicinity of the Baltic Sea. Interdisciplinary research topics on the Baltic Sea ecosystem, broad in-house expertise in physical, chemical and biological oceanography, and marine geology, state-of-the-art-laboratory equipment and infrastructure together with modern facilities provide an excellent framework for best research conditions.
Application costs cannot be covered. We would like to note that confirmations of receipts are not sent.
