Scientist* Machine Learning for Optical Network Automation

The group „Data Analytics and Signal Processing“ (DSP) in the department of Photonic Networks and Systems is looking for new staff to support their activities in the area of optical telecommunication and network automation, in particular development of privacy-preserving machine learning algorithms. The group is running a number of research projects in close collaboration with industry partners to develop novel network automation solutions for application in future 6G networks and validate them experimentally. Become part of a highly motivated international team of researchers and work in one of the most advanced research laboratories in Europe on the future of optical communication.

What you will do

  • Research and development in the field of optical communications and communication networks

  • Automation of optical access networks in conjunction with metro transport networks

  • Design, development, and experimental validation of machine learning pipelines together with advanced telemetry streaming workflows

  • Research on privacy-preserving machine learning algorithms 

  • Development of network APPs for autonomous monitoring and maintenance of optical communication networks

  • Presentation of R&D results in the form of project reports, presentations, and journal articles

What you bring to the table

  • University degree / master studies in the field of communications engineering, computer science, or related fields

  • Excellent background in machine learning and hands-on experience with various libraries

  • Excellent programming skills in Python

  • Background in IP and optical networking technologies (switches and routers)

  • Experience with databases and cloud technologies (Docker, Kubernetes)

The following knowledge is an advantage:

  • Experience with network programmability and protocols (e.g. NETCONF, gRPC, gNMI) 

  • Experience with SDN controllers and network orchestrators

  • Experience with Apache Kafka, Influx, Grafana

The position is initially limited to 2 years. An extension is explicitly desired.
