The Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy is a pioneer and a driver of bioeconomy research. We create the scientific foundation to transform agricultural, food, industrial and energy systems into a comprehensive bio-based circular economy. We develop and integrate techniques, processes and management strategies, effectively converging technologies to intelligently crosslink highly diverse bioeconomic production systems and to control them in a knowledge-based, adaptive and largely automated manner. We conduct research in dialogue with society - knowledge-motivated and application-inspired.

In the program area Individualized Livestock Production we focus our application-oriented basic research in line with the One Health approach improving animal welfare, husbandry environment, animal and environmental protection as well as the competitiveness of agriculture. This includes also the development and implementation of on-farm energy management based on renewable energy systems. Our research aims for objective animal welfare standards, flexible and regionally adapted concepts to solve environmental conflicts, a transparent animal husbandry, consumer acceptance and regional added value.

To support our working group Barn Climate and Emission Modelling – Department Sensors and Modelling for the European project “Development of a practical data management system with embedded sensors for improved environmental management and transparency of dairy farming (ET4D)” we are looking for a

Scientist (m/f/d) (65 %)

The interdisciplinary project ET4D connects companies, academic research institutions and universities from Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Poland, Hungary, Turkey and Israel. A key objective is to demonstrate that by transferring environmental information from farms to different interest groups, we can increase the transparency of the milk production system, support sustainable decision making and ensure that farmers will benefit directly from sharing the data collected on their farms. We will use data science approaches to model well-known cause-effect relations in the production system based on selected sensor outputs collected in case study farms across Europe. The dynamics of key features within a given range of uncertainty will be presented in tailored reports with different levels of aggregation, filtering and anonymisation of data/information.

Your responsibilities

  • Processing of sensor data from case study farms (including animal and environmental data as well as energy demands and data transfer)
  • Fitting and evaluation of regression models
  • Definition of scoring schemes and assessment indicator for tailored reporting based on social diagnosis
  • Implementation of a web application for tailored reporting
  • Communication with international project partners & support of project management
  • Presentation of project results at conferences  / workshops
  • Publish results in peer-reviewed scientific journals
  • Collect contributions and manage the submission of project reports

Your qualifications

  • Successfully completed PhD or university degree (diploma / master examination) in a scientific-technical course in the field of computer science, engineering, physics, mathematics or comparable
  • Very good knowledge in data science / statistics, particularly recurrent and time-series models
  • Very good programming skills (e.g., R or Python)
  • Experience in frontend development desirable
  • Proven ability to write scientific publications desirable
  • Strong interest in interdisciplinary research, experience in environmental monitoring and/or social diagnosis desirable
  • Very good spoken and written English skills
  • Independent and goal-oriented working style, personal commitment, reliability, high sense of responsibility, ability to work in a large international team and willingness to cooperate
  • Willingness to travel
  • European driving licence class B is desirable

This part-time position (65 %) is limited until April 30th, 2026.

The salary is based on your qualification and professional experience according to TV-L up to salary group 13.
