The Department of Photonic Networks and Systems at the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications (Heinrich Hertz Institute) is a world leader in the field of optical communication networks. The department is currently involved in several research projects that analyze and optimize the environmental impact of information and communication technology, in particular optical aggregation and transport networks. As part of the F5G OpenLab (https://www.f5g-openlab.org/), test environments are being set up to evaluate and improve the ecological footprint of telecommunications infrastructures. The aim is to provide a development, test and reference environment for German and European industry and to enable energy- and resource-saving operation of telecommunications and industrial communication network infrastructures. The entire chain of system components will be evaluated in order to ensure a comprehensive lifecycle assessment. Be a part of our team and come on a journey of research and innovation!

What you will do

  • Research and development in the field of energy-efficient optical communication networks

  • Research and development in the field of life cycle assessment of ICT infrastructure

  • Planning and development of test environments for the implementation of standardized measurements (e.g. according to ITU-T L.1333, L.1480)

What you bring to the table

  • Completed Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Communications Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Economics, Environmental and Sustainability Sciences or comparable degree programs (preferably with a doctoral degree)

  • Basic knowledge in the field of life cycle assessment

  • Basic knowledge in the field of communication networks

  • Experience in setting up experimental test infrastructures

  • Fluent in English and German

The position is initially limited to 2 years. An extension is explicitly desired.

The weekly working time is 39 hours. This position is also available on a part-time basis.
