Job description:

The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam - GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national centre for research into the geosphere. With around 1,500 employees, we develop a sound understanding of systems and processes of the solid Earth as well as strategies and options for action to counter global change, understand natural hazards and sustainably secure energy and raw material requirements.

The Environmental Mapping and Analysis Program (EnMAP, www.enmap.org ) is the German hyperspectral satellite mission funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action. 

EnMAP was successfully launched into space in April 2022 and started routine operations in November 2022. The main scientific goal of EnMAP is to provide high-quality data for the analysis of environmental changes, ecosystem responses to human activities, and the management of natural resources. The GFZ Potsdam has the scientific lead of the mission and is responsible for the external data quality assessment and foreground/background mission, application development in the fields of geology and soil sciences, training and community building activities, and coordination of the scientific collaboration in the EnMAP PI project, with mission partners and within the hyperspectral community.


Your responsibilities:
  • Research on EnMAP data application in geosciences on a chosen topic, processing and analyses of hyperspectral images for the provision of thematic maps (soil, arid areas, geology, snow) and data quality analyses
  • Support by project coordination including reporting, organizing project meetings, and project communication
  • Supporting the development of the scientific program of the EnMAP mission and cooperation with national and international partners at research institutions, space agencies and national public authorities
  •  Publication and presentation: peer-review publications in scientific journals, presentation at national and international workshops and conferences, organization and moderation of workshop sessions, free and open publication of data, resources and software
  • Interest in Education and training/ User interaction and community building for further development of HYPERedu and user event is wished 
  • Outreach and public relations: Preparing information and promotional materials, preparing web content and press releases, organization of user Workshops

Your qualifications:
  • MSc or PhD in Geosciences, Soil Sciences, Geoecology or related disciplines with a strong background in remote sensing and imaging spectroscopy
  • Experience in hyperspectral remote sensing data analysis and science publication writing
  • Experience in proposal writing and project coordination
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment with collaborations to national and international colleagues
  • Fluency in spoken and written German is a prerequisite

Start date: As soon as possible
Fixed-term: Until 31st Dezember 2026
Salary: The position is classed as salary group 13 according to “TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)”. The salary group is determined on the basis of the Collective Wage Agreement and the respective personal qualifications.
Working hours: Full-time (currently 39 h/week); The position is generally suitable for part-time work.
