Job description:

The position to be filled is embedded in the project ASPIRE - Advancing Subseasonal Predlctions at Reduced Computational Effort, which is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) through a Starting Grant.

About the project: The current frontier for weather forecasting is the so-called subseasonal time scale from two weeks to two months in advance. In order to take early preventive measures, reliable forecasts on this time scale are becoming increasingly important for many socio-economic areas. Subseasonal predictability can be gained from modes of variability in the Earth system. ASPIRE will focus on some of these, namely modes of tropical convective variability. The aim of the PhD project is to quantify the added value of local kilometer-scale resolution in the tropics for the sub-seasonal weather forecasting skill in the European region. In a first step, you conduct two large sets of numerical hindcast experiments - a reference experiment with globally parameterized convection and a second experiment with local convection-permitting resolution. Composite analyzes of the prediction differences between the two experiments complement the verification. These will provide insights into the role of modes of tropical convective variability and mean flow structure in preventing or enabling convection-enabling resolution to improve forecast skill in the extratropics. Statistical post-processing is used to convert the purely deterministic experiments into probabilistic predictions. The future holder's research will focus on quantifying the added value of local kilometer resolution in the tropics for extratropical subseasonal forecasts.

The activity is suitable for a doctorate. A doctorate is desired.
