Offer Description

The Leibniz Institute on Aging – Fritz Lipmann Institute (FLI) in Jena is a federal and state government-funded research institute and member of the Leibniz Association (Leibniz-Gemeinschaft). FLI’ s internationally visible and highly competitive research is focused on understanding the mechanisms of aging and associated age-related diseases. Scientists from over 40 countries are currently investigating the molecular mechanisms of aging and the occurrence of age-related diseases. Our aim is to create the basis for new approaches in medicine as a way to improve the health of the elderly ( ).

As of 01.01.2024 or as soon as possible we are seeking you to support the future Scientific Director Prof. Dario Riccardo Valenzano:

Scientific Secretary (m/f/x)
to the Director

As Scientific Secretary (m/f/x), you support the Scientific Director in strategic and conceptual questions of science management and in the implementation of FLI’s research priorities and structural goals. You will coordinate topics between decision-making entities, federal and state ministries, the Leibniz Association, and regulatory bodies. Collaboration is a key aspect of your role, which includes i.e. working with the scientific group leaders, administrative departments, committees like the Leibniz Graduate School on Aging (LGSA), and the Compliance board. You will serve as the bridge connecting the realms of science, politics, and the public, and will engage in partnerships with international consortia, excellence clusters, associations, and external organizations.

Further Tasks and Challenges:

  • Coordination of cooperation with the Leibniz Association at management and working level
  • Support with and coordination of the cooperation with funding government bodies
  • Further development of the Compliance Management System and collaboration in the Compliance board
  • Coordination of equal opportunity and diversity topics
  • Support of the Scientific Career Development (Postdoc Network, LGSA)
  • Support in the preparation of grant applications to third-party funding bodies
  • Establishment and support of international research cooperations
  • Support in the organization of international symposia


  • Degree in biology, biochemistry or other life science field with completed doctorate and research and publication experience
  • Professional experience in universities or research institutions also abroad
  • Excellent knowledge of research policy issues and discourse, experience in science management is beneficial
  • very good communication skills, written and spoken in German and English (C2 level), experience with public speaking an advantage
  • Willingness to travel

  • Employment contract in accordance with the collective agreement for the public service of the federal states (TV-L), full-time, long-term employment is desired.
