The Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography in Leipzig, Germany, invites applications for a position from 1 April 2024 as
Scientific researcher (70 %, E 13 TV-L) (f/m/d)
for assistance in our research project „MILEstone: Migrants’ Integration in Local Economies “ (Interreg EUROPE) in the department Regional Geography of Europe, research group Mobilities and Migration.
The Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography (IfL) in Leipzig analyses social processes from geographical perspectives and makes social change visible. The IfL is the only non-university research institution for geography in the German-speaking world. As a member of the Leibniz Association, the institute is funded by the Federal Republic of Germany and its states. We value diversity and welcome all applications - regardless of gender, nationality, ethnic or social origin, religion, disability, age and sexual orientation.
The goal of the MILEstone project is to address the challenges related to the labour market integration of non-EU nationals by enabling access to the labour market, providing support to migrants and municipalities, fostering entrepreneurship and encouraging life-long learning through vocational training. In order to achieve this goal, it is necessary to strengthen and develop public policies underpinning sustainable labour market inclusion of third-country nationals. The project equally aims to foster collaboration, intensive exchange and joint learning thanks to the variety of actors representing different geographic and institutional backgrounds. To achieve a fruitful exchange of experiences, members of the MILEstone consortium represent both new (East Germany, Greece, Poland, Slovenia) and established (Finland, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden) destinations for non-EU nationals.
Job description

- support of project partners in writing a baseline-study on the conditions of migration and integration in their territories, stakeholder mapping and involvement, as well as finding and adapting good practices for labour market integration of non-EU nationals
- contribution to a scientific book on the project results (final publication)
- presentation and publication of project results at international conferences and in international journals
- organisation and implementation of workshops and project meetings
- supporting the IfL project management in communicating with project partners
- the use of the research in the project for doctoral studies is desired
We offer
- a temporary position until 28.02.2027
- an interesting, varied task to be shaped by your personal commitment with the possibility to implement own research ideas
- an exciting collegiate research atmosphere with considerable scope for creativity and international cooperation
- advice on the conception and implementation of your doctorate as well as opportunities for research-related qualification
- an employment contract based on the regulations of the collective agreement for the public sector of the Federal States (TV-L) with a special annual payment, capital-forming benefits and a company pension scheme (VBL)
- a supplementary payment for the job ticket
- a family-friendly working environment with flexible working hours and the possibility of mobile working within the framework of a company agreement on the compatibility of family and career
Our expectations
- an above-average university degree (Master's, Diploma) social sciences (e.g. political science, human geography, sociology, cultural studies, European or Eastern European studies) with thematic reference to the above mentioned responsibilities
- profound knowledge in the fields of international migration and integration
- relevant professional experience (e.g., as student assistant) in international and/or migration-related projects
- very good knowledge of qualitative methods of empirical social research
- excellent communication skills and very good writing skills in English and German; knowledge of other languages (e.g., Spanish, Polish, Dutch, Italian) are welcome
- a high level of personal commitment and reliability, ability to work in interdisciplinary teams
What else do we want
The fulfilment of the tasks requires meetings with project partners; the willingness to travel domestically and abroad as required for this is a prerequisite. We expect an ambitious, independently thinking and acting personality who brings a high degree of initiative, implementation strength, team skills as well as a willingness to innovate. Participation in academic teaching is possible if desired.
