The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) is the national institute which prepares expert reports and opinions on questions of food, feed and chemical safety and consumer health protection in Germany on the basis of internationally recognised scientific assessment criteria. It advises the Federal Government and other institutions and interest groups in these areas. The BfR conducts independent research on topics that are closely linked to its assessment tasks. It is an institution with legal capacity within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL).

In the department Chemical and Product Safety of the BfR, unit “Product Properties and Nanotechnology”, there is the following permanent position to fill immediately

Scientific Officer for the Health Assessment of Tobacco Products (F/M/X)

Part-time employment is possible.

Tasks:

  • Health assessment of tobacco products, including new products, in particular electronic cigarettes, electronic shishas, tobacco heaters and their ingredients
  • Development of the risk assessment for flavours in novel tobacco products
  • Participation in procedures for the approval of tobacco heaters
  • Scientific planning, organisation and evaluation of studies to analyse the emissions of novel tobacco products
  • Scientific collaboration on statements of the BfR
  • Advice to official investigation facilities of the federal states
  • Participation in national and international expert groups
  • Instruction of employees as well as trainees and students
  • Graduate supervision (dissertations, bachelor and master theses)

Your profile:

  • Completed university studies (master’s degree, diploma or similar university degree) in Toxicology, Pharmacy, Biochemistry, Biology, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Chemistry or a similar discipline, doctorate required
  • Relevant practical experience in the field of tobacco product toxicology
  • Practical experience in handling databases
  • Good knowledge of the German language as well as very good knowledge of spoken and written English
  • Good computer skills and a conscientious way of working, flexibility, the ability to work in a team and resilience as well as the willingness to travel on business

Desirable:

  • Doctorate
  • Knowledge of tobacco chemistry and novel tobacco products
  • Experience in committee work at national/international level
