Scientific Member of Staff (m/w/d)

Updated: over 1 year ago
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

The Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, Leibniz-Institut für Höchstfrequenztechnik (FBH) is an application-oriented research institute in the fields of high-frequency electronics, photonics and quantum physics. It researches electronic and optical components, modules and systems based on compound semiconductors. These devices are key enablers that address the needs of today’s society in fields like communications, energy, health, and mobility. It covers the entire value chain from design to ready-for-delivery systems.

The Joint Lab Quantum Photonic Components at the FBH is seeking a scientific staff member for the design and modelling of passive, GaAs-based opto-electronic components.

(Reference number 22/22)

Your activities

GaAs-based diode lasers constitute the photonic backbone of quantum sensors. To allow for miniaturization and scalable production a multitude of functional features has to be integrated into the laser chips (e.g. to develop a monolithically integrated extended-cavity diode laser). To facilitate proper design of these evermore complex GaAs opto-electronic components, FBH develops a multi-physics, multi-scale modelling and simulation environment which provides predictions of performance parameters relevant to quantum sensor applications.

The research will cover theory and software development. It will address full 3D and reduced dimensionality modelling of low-loss narrowband GaAs-based Bragg gratings. The software part will cover the development of reliable simulation environment using optimization methods, e.g., Bayesian optimization for hyperparameter tuning, and integration with artificial intelligence algorithms. The optimization results will be implemented as guidelines for novel, monolithically integrated semiconductor-based opto-electronic structures. Corresponding test structures will be fabricated in our clean rooms. Characterization results obtained by an experimental team will enable the improvement of the design and simulation environment.

Your profile

Candidates must have completed their doctoral degree in physics, electrical engineering or mathematics. They have a strong theoretical background, including physics modelling and numerical computation. Familiarity with artificial intelligence algorithms and inverse design in photonics or semiconductor opto-electronics is an advantage. Team working as well as independent working skills and a professional English language are essential for this position. German language skills are desirable.

Our offer

Employment, remuneration and social benefits are based on the collective agreement for the public sector (TVöD Bund). The position to be filled starting from 01.08.2022 and is initially limited to two years.

FBH is an equal-opportunity employer and actively supports the compatibility of family and career. Particular attention is paid to gender equality. The Institute strives to increase the proportion of women in this area. Female candidates are encouraged to apply. Among equally qualified applicants, preference will be given to handicapped candidates.

Have we piqued your interest? Then we look forward to your online application. Please click on "Apply online" and submit your complete application documents not later than July 1, 2022.
