The INM – Leibniz Institute for New Materials (Leibniz-Institut für Neue Materialien gGmbH) is a leading international research institute for materials science located on the campus of Saarland University in Saarbrücken, Germany. The INM and Saarland University are seeking a
Scientific Director and Head of Department (f/m/x)
for the Leibniz Institute for New Materials starting January 2023. The successful applicant will simultaneously be appointed as
Professor (W3) for New Materials (f/m/x)
in the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology at Saarland University.
The seeked Scientific Director will co-manage the INM as part of a 3-member management team consisting of two Scientific Directors and the Business Director, with the chair (CEO) position alternating between the two Scientific Directors.
This advertisement is targeted at outstanding, internationally recognized scientists in the field of modern materials research and related disciplines who have leadership and management experience. The INM is looking for an individual who will support and expand the INM's scientific profile.The future candidate should cooperate closely with Saarland University and strengthen the strategic connection between the two institutions. Cooperation with other research institutes around the university campus and within the Leibniz Association is also sought. The INM is open to new research concepts that will complement the INM's research strategy. Examples of topics of interest for the institute are bioinspired approaches to sustainable materials design, integration of new materials into soft electronic devices, and modelling.
Since the INM's mission entails both fundamental scientific research and transfer to industrial applications, cooperation with industry and the acquisition of public and industrial third-party funding will be expected.
The appointment to Scientific Director is for a period of five years, with the possibility of subsequent reappointment. The appointment to University Professor is permanent. Remuneration is in accordance with the tariff scale W salary, plus a managing director's remuneration that includes performance-related components.
The appointments will be made in accordance with the general provisions of German public sector employment law. Candidates must have experience in and an aptitude for academic teaching. They will have a PhD or doctorate in an appropriate subject and will have demonstrated a particular capacity for independent academic research, typically by having obtained an advanced, post-doctoral research degree (Habilitation or equivalent) or by having been appointed to a junior professorship.
