The position to be filled is in the Business Unit “Demand Analyses and Projections” in the Competence Center "Energy Technology and Energy Systems" and is available at the earliest opportunity.


The Competence Center "Energy Technology and Energy Systems" analyzes innovative energy technologies and contributes to developing the societal, political and institutional framework for a sustainable energy system. 

What you will do

  • You are a doctoral candidate in the doctoral program at Fraunhofer ISI based on a four-year contract. You are writing your thesis at the intersection of project work and your own independent scientific research with a strong focus on current issues in applied research. 
  • You work mainly in the field of industrial transformation and take an interdisciplinary perspective that links technology, industry and politics. 
  • Your work focus is on the evaluation and analysis of transformation pathways toward a carbon-neutral basic chemicals sector. Issues such as recycling potentials, raw material basis, the CO2 cycle and interactions with the energy system play an important role. 
  • You are involved in working on interdisciplinary research projects and work in different project teams.
  • In the projects, you are increasingly taking on more responsibility and developing your project management skills. 

What you bring to the table

  • You have successfully obtained a university science degree in engineering (process engineering, materials engineering, chemistry, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering) or industrial engineering. 
  • You would like to advance your scientific qualifications with a PhD and have the potential for further scientific development and profile building. 
  • You are motivated to contribute to the success of the energy transition through applied research. 
  • You have experience of working with quantitative methods, ideally programming skills as well as experience in dealing with large datasets/databases. 
  • Experience with energy systems modelling as well as with industrial and chemical industry transformation is an advantage. 
  • We require good communication skills in German and English as well as the ability to present research results in a convincing manner, both orally and in writing.

  • ISI doctoral program: The doctoral program at Fraunhofer ISI is very closely linked to the research topics and projects in the Competence Center and consists of an orientation phase followed by a dissertation phase.

The position is limited to four years. The weekly working time is 39 hours in the first year and then part-time in line with the doctoral program.
