The Leibniz-Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ) aims for excellence in horticultural research and related plant, environmental, nutritional and social sciences. IGZ is based in Großbeeren close to Berlin and is a member of the Leibniz Association (WGL). IGZ conducts strategic and international research for the sustainable production and use of vegetables, contributing to food security, human well-being and the conservation of natural resources. At IGZ, researchers from different disciplines work together on core-funded and grant-funded projects, in collaboration with national and international research partners.

Researcher (f,m,d) in bioinformatics
Reference Number: 07/2022/2
The employment will be initially until 31.01.2025. The salary will be based on qualification and research experience according to the wage agreement TV-L, salary domain east, up to EG 13, full-time.
The Researcher will be part of the research group „Principles of integrated pest managment“ (MICRO.1). The research group aims to improve the understanding of the plant-microbe-environment interaction for better sustaianbale plant cropping systems.
The Researcher will work on the project „ Implications of soil managment practices and application of biocontrol strains on soil disease suppressiveness against pathogens“. The BMBF funded project is part of the program “Soil as a sustainable Resource for the Bioeconomy – BonaRes”. The Researcher should analyse the function of microbial community in the rhizosphere of the plant.
Tasks include
- bioinformatic processing, analysis and interpretation of rhizosphere microbiome datasets
- functional analysis of rhizosphere microbiomes based on shotgun metagenome sequences
- implementation of analysis pipelines
- publication activities and presentation of research results at conferences
We are looking for
- a Master (MSc) or diploma degree in in computer science, bioinformatics, biology or a related discipline with relevant prior knowledge preferably with a PhD
- profound knowledge of microbial and plant genomics
- comprehensive biological background knowledge of microbe-plant interactions and/or plant microbiomes
- experience with microbial phylogeny and taxonomy as well as functional interaction networks
- experience in database management, bioinformatic processing of large datasets, processing and analysis of microbiome data
- proven publication record in the specified areas in international journals
- ability to work in a team and very good communication skills in German and English
