Research Technican in Zooplankton Ecology

The Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW), Section of Biological Oceanography, has a vacancy for a

within a new focus research area “Shallow Water Processes and Transitions to the Baltic Scale”. The position is to be filled on a flexible part-time or full-time basis and is intended to start 01.09.2023. Part-time work is possible with a minimum of 28 hours per week. Remuneration is paid in accordance with the Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst der Länder (TV-L, Public Sector Collective Agreement on Länder) salary scale at level TV-L EG 7. The employment will initially be limited for two years (on the basis of § 14 II TzBfG), as far as the legal requirements are met. Thereafter, the position is planned to be converted into a permanent employment.

Who are we?

The IOW is an independent research institute of the Leibniz Association for which equal opportunities, family friendliness and work-life balance are very important. Our research focus is on the coastal and marginal seas, especially the Baltic Sea. The staff of the four sections Physical Oceanography and Instrumentation, Marine Chemistry, Biological Oceanography and Marine Geology works interdisciplinary within a joint research programme.

What will be your tasks?

The technician will be associated with the Zooplankton-Ecology group in the Department of Biological Oceanography. The candidate will provide support in the day-to-day operations of experiments and research activities regarding zooplankton ecology of shallow coastal zones. The main responsibilities include the maintenance of phyto- and zooplankton cultures and the technical assistance in experimental field and laboratory work targeting life-cycle transitions of zooplankton. Some laboratory management tasks and the maintenance of technical equipment are required. The ideal candidate would have interest advancing methodological protocols.

What do we expect from you?

• Vocational training as technical assistant in biology or a comparable education in an area of expertise relevant to the position
• Experience in the technical support of scientific work
• Experience working with cultures of phyto- and/or zooplankton
• Excellent organisation skills
• Willingness to participate in field work and seagoing research activities

Desirable would be:

•  Experience in support of experimental work or field campaigns
•  Some knowledge of molecular and/or physiological techniques
•  Previous knowledge on zooplankton taxonomy although training will be
  provided
•  Proficiency in English
