Applications are invited for a Research Scientist (with lab management responsibilities) to join the Laboratory of Prof. Dr. Lindsay Hall (Chair of Intestinal Microbiome) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM).

About us:
The Hall group’s research focus involves defining the complex interactions of the intestinal microbiota, particularly during the early life developmental window. The group is focused on how microbial communities and specific microbiota members (e.g. Bifidobacterium) interact with other microbes and the host including: (i) the impact of diet, (ii) how these microbes modulate critical infection resistance, and (iii) beneficially impact host responses, including immune regulation. We utilise multi-disciplinary approaches to answer these key questions including; microbiology (in vitro model-colon systems for complex culturing and molecular microbiology), metabolomics, next generation sequencing (both host and microbe), bioinformatics tools, in vivo models (germ-free and disease models) and human studies (infants and adults).
This particular position aligns with a large 5-year Wellcome-funded grant entitled: Deciphering Bifidobacterium-diet-immune interactions in global infant populations. Building on our exciting preliminary data, and leveraging global maternal-infant cohort samples, this multi-disciplinary project seeks to characterise geographically distinct Bifidobacterium populations, and profile maternal breastmilk samples. The goal is to expand our fundamental knowledge by elucidating how Bifidobacterium species and genetic variants cooperate within an early-life diet (breastmilk) environment and define ‘signatures’ across different geographical regions. A fundamental understanding of these features will allow selection of Bifidobacterium-communities for next-stage translational projects.
Candidate profile:
We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who is motivated to deliver Wellcome-funded project objectives, and help manage the day-to-day work in the Hall lab, with a focus on and someone who is seeking to join an inclusive team. There will be a requirement to undertake microbiology-focused studies that align with different aspects of the Wellcome project, alongside organisational and oversights roles. The skills/experience of the successful candidate may include microbiome/microbiology (or related subject) and classical and molecular methods for microbial-based assays (some bioinformatics knowledge/experience would also be a useful additional skill). As this role will involve managing and working within the lab, communication and project management skills are a central component. There will also be scope for further development and organisation of the team activities (e.g. LMIS), including developing research plans and bringing in new technologies, thus expanding the successful candidates expertise and skills portfolio. The post holder will also assist with training students and visitors to the laboratory, and in the supervision and delivery of teaching.
Key responsibilities
- Microbiological and microbiome studies, including microbe-diet interactions (traditional and molecular based)
- Lab management and oversight (lab-based activities, Health & Safety and ethical and legal regulations)
- Database development, management and curation with respect strain collections – and working within EU regulatory frameworks for next-stage IP and translational projects
- Liaise with group members and external collaborators
- Student supervision/training
Requirements:
- Microbiologist or expert in a related subject (please note this position can be appointed at different levels based on experience – and candidates may have a Bachelors/BSc, Masters/MSc or PhD)
- Experience in biomedical laboratory/industry-based research
- Experience in project management/ oversight roles is desirable
- Expertise and hands-on experience in microbiome/microbiology methods
- Knowledge and/or experience in microbial/microbiome bioinformatics is desirable
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, using initiative and applying problem solving skills
- Outstanding personal initiative and communication skills
- Demonstrable written and spoken communication skills (English is essential and German Language is desirable)
- A desire to learn, to innovate and to move out of their comfort zone
- Excellent organisational skills (project management)
- Previous people management experience

Your qualifications:
We are looking an individual that has a Bachelors/BSc, Masters/MSc or PhD degree in a microbiology-associated research field (e.g. microbiome or other relevant subject), and suitable expertise as highlighted above. We are keen to have someone who collaborates well in a team environment and can also drive and manage research ideas/projects forward independently. The successful candidate will also have proficient written and oral communication skills and demonstrable outputs (e.g. industrial report experience, publications).
Our offer:
We offer a full-time position as a Lab manager/ research scientist and in the first instance the position will be limited to two years, with the possibility of any extension until the end of the 5 year grant. There is also potential option for a part-time role (with job share). Payment will be based on the TV-L.
