We are searching for a motivated candidate for the research associate position that will focus on modeling and optimization of a realistic industrial process (car paint shop) dominated with heat consumption using Modelica modeling language. The position is funded through the collaborative project with BMW Group. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to take a leading position in project execution and to contribute to improvements of real life industrial plants through production of cutting-edge research results and their dissemination within the scientific community. In addition, the candidate will have an opportunity to work closely with the TUM CoSES research team members and to be fully integrated in the BMW Group ecosystem.

The position is funded through the research project conducted in partnership with BMW Group. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to enroll to TUM doctoral program.

The collaborative project with BMW Group aims to accurately model a realistic industrial process (car paint shop) dominated with heat consumption and to investigate the possibilities of energy consumption optimization. The developed models will be validated using real-life measurements from example industrial process. Further, the most promising optimization techniques will be investigated that can lead to significant operational improvement of the industrial process.

Tasks:
• Develop a Modelica model of the realistic industrial process dominated with heat consumption using existing modelica libraries and to further develop the existing if needed.
• Validate the developed model with the measurements from the industrial plants.
• Analyze the operation of the industrial plant in different condition and identify the potential operational optimization of the process.
• Develop and demonstrate with the new operational strategies using the industrial plant model.
• Prepare the high quality project deliverables according to the project schedule.
• Publish the research results in the high quality international journal and conferences.

Your Qualifications:
• Master-degree in mechanical/electrical engineering, computer science, physics or equivalent with excellent grade from reputed university.
• Strong technical background in modelling of thermal systems
• Strong knowledge of Modelica modelling language.
• Practical experience in a laboratory with thermal systems is preferred.
• General interest in operation of industrial plants and optimization of their energy consumption.
• Excellent English and German language skills.
• Good analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work in a team.

Application materials:
• Resume accompanied with the brief statement of scientific interests and motivation.
• Transcripts for bachelor- and master-level studies.
• Names and contact details of two relevant references and the type of the relationship.

The application materials should be sent as ONE PDF file with the subject line “BMW PhD Application” to vedran.peric@tum.de . Evaluation of applications may start immediately. The deadline for the application is February 5th, or until the position is filled.
The Technical University of Munich (TUM) is one of Europe’s leading universities in science and technology, and one of the Germany’s Universities of Excellence. TUM was ranked as the best university in the European Union according to the 2021 “QS World University Rankings” and the best university in Germany for the sixth time in a row.

The TUM CoSES Research Center focuses on modeling, control and operation of multi-energy systems. CoSES operates a microgrid laboratory where different control approaches can be validated in realistic conditions.
As an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer, TUM explicitly encourages applications from women as well as from all others who would bring additional diversity dimensions to the university's research and teaching strategies. The preference will be given to disabled candidates with essentially the same qualifications.

The appointment may start at the earliest April 1st 2023. The initial appointment will be for 1 years with the planned extension. Salary is in accordance with the German State Regulated Public Salary Scale (TV-L E13, 100%).
