Research Associate (m/f/d) –Damage mechanics and structural-design-analysis of wind turbine rotor blades

Salary group 13 TVöD
Temporary contract for 3 years
Full-time/suitable as part-time employment

The Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und ‑prüfung (BAM) is a materials research organization in Germany. Our mission is to ensure safety in technology and chemistry. We perform research and testing in materials science, materials engineering and chemistry to improve the safety of products and processes. At BAM we do research that matters. Our work covers a broad array of topics in the focus areas of energy, infrastructure, environment, materials, and analytical sciences.

We are looking for talented people to join us.

Your responsibilities include:

The opening is part of the cooperative competence centre Wind@BAM and dedicated to the sub-project for wind turbine rotor blades.

Rotor blades of wind turbines are cyclically highly stressed lightweight structures made of polymer matrix composites (PMC), which to date cannot be recycled. Recycling processes and better recyclable matrix materials are currently being developed. The focus of your work is the development of numerical calculation and experimental verification methods for operational stability, and the identification of relevant damage mechanisms of next generation turbine blades made from PMCs containing recycled constituents.

You work in close cooperation with the tower and foundation sub‑areas as well as with condition monitoring and non‑destructive testing in order to develop concepts for early damage detection and sustainable damage repair. In doing so, you are making your contribution to a reliable and sustainable energy supply for our society.

Your qualifications:

  • Successfully completed scientific university degree (diploma or master’s degree) in materials science, aerospace, physics or a comparable discipline
  • A good doctorate in one of the above-mentioned disciplines is an advantage
  • Excellent knowledge in the field of polymer matrix composites with a focus on fatigue strength, mechanics and related damage mechanisms
  • Excellent knowledge of analytical and numerical calculation methods of PMCs under multiaxial loading
  • Excellent publication record in the relevant research field
  • Experience in the electronical measurement techniques are of advantage
  • Ability to conduct independent scientific work
  • Very good German and English language skills
  • Goal-oriented and structured working style and conceptual, strategic and innovative thinking skills
  • Initiative, willingness to learn as well as ability to work in a team and willingness to cooperate

We offer:

  • Interdisciplinary research at the interface of politics, economics and society
  • Work in national and international networks with universities, research institutes and industrial companies
  • Outstanding facilities and infrastructure
  • Flexible working hours and mobile working
