At the University of Greifswald’s Institute of Geography and Geology, Chair of Applied Geology in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, there is a job vacancy starting 1 April 2024, subject to budgetary regulations, for a full-time

Research Associate.

The position on offer is permanent. Payment will be made according to pay group 13 TV‑L Wissenschaft. The position can be transformed into a civil servant position (A13). The position is suitable for part-time employment.

Job Description:

  • Management of the Applied Geology laboratories (hydrogeochemical, hydrogeological and soil mechanics laboratories), including the supervision and further development of instrumental equipment (laboratory and field equipment); coordination of work in the laboratory areas and supervision of laboratory staff as well as student and research assistants and employees
  • Teaching in the field of applied geology, currently 8 classes (45 min. each) per week, in particular hydrogeology, soil mechanics, laboratory and field methods within the framework of the geoscientific Bachelor's and Master's degree programs (exercises, practicals, seminars, lectures, excursions); supervision of student qualification theses
  • Independent research work in the field of applied geology, in particular hydrogeochemical research questions using the existing laboratory infrastructure; independent acquisition and implementation of third-party funded projects; supervision of doctoral projects

Job Requirements:

  • Completed scientific university degree (Master) in geosciences, and specialisation in the field of hydrogeology/hydrogeochemistry
  • Completed relevant doctorate degree in the field of hydrogeochemistry with a minimum grade of “very good”
  • Relevant professional experience after the doctorate, preferably in various research laboratories in Germany and abroad
  • Experience in applying for third-party funding and proof of successfully independently acquired and conducted research projects (incl. R&D)
  • Proof of own and thematically relevant scientific publications in high-ranking international peer-reviewed journals, appropriate to career stage
  • Experience in setting up and managing research laboratories, including the supervision of laboratory staff and users
  • Experience in water and solid phase analysis as well as in the evaluation, presentation and interpretation of corresponding data sets; experience in experimental water-solid interaction (column experiments, batch experiments, sequential extraction methods, etc.)
  • Relevant experience in teaching in various teaching formats (see above), the ability to conduct courses in both German and English (and thus a fluent command of both languages) is required; experience in the supervision and evaluation of student theses

Other knowledge and skills that are taken into account in the selection decision:

  • Work experience at scientific institutions abroad
  • Experience in the acquisition of large-scale analytical laboratory equipment
  • Experience in online teaching; additional qualification in university didactics
  • Accuracy of fit and connectivity of previous and planned future research work to the research priorities of the chair (esp. hydrogeochemistry of trace elements and nutrients) and the priorities of the Geo2  Institute and the University as a whole (esp. climate change, rural areas)
  • Experience in interdisciplinary cooperation and laboratory methods (e.g., microbiology, isotope analysis)
  • Experience as a reviewer and in active participation in international conferences; experience in committee work and technically relevant working groups
  • Experience with relevant computer programs (MS Office, hydrogeological and hydrogeochemical modelling and evaluation software, GIS, statistical and visualization software, Python)
  • Car driving licence (incl. trailer driving licence) with appropriate experience and safe handling of road traffic, including larger cars (use and care of institute vehicles)
