The mission of the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) as a nationally and internationally active research institute is to deliver solutions for an ecologically, economically and socially sustainable agriculture – together with society. ZALF is a member of the Leibniz Association and is located in Müncheberg (approx. 35 minutes by regional train from Berlin-Lichtenberg). The institute also maintains locations in Dedelow and Paulinenaue.

The project Development of the assessment of the yield loss risk in Saxony” aims to integrate indicators based on remote sensing, meteorological, hydrological data for crop specific assessment of yield loss risk with a specific focus on drought risk.

We are now offering a full-time position at our location in Müncheberg for a limited period of 12 months as a

Research associate (f/m/d)

Your tasks:

  • implementation, adaptation and maintenance of algorithms on drought risk assessment
  • derivation of indicators of risk based on meteorological, hydrological and remote sensing based time series
  • integration of crop-specific and management information (crop type, phenology and sowing/harvesting dates, irrigation)
  • extensive review of other yield loss risk factors
  • contribution to documents collaboratively created, such as papers, documentation, reports

Your qualifications:

  • university (MSc) degree in the field of Agriculture, Environmental science, Geosciences or related fields
  • programming experience in Python or extensive experience in another high-level programming language is a prerequisite
  • experience in geospatial data science, GIS, and open source software is required
  • record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals is an asset
  • experience with Git and GitHub and Linux environment is desirable
  • as an internationally research institution, located in Germany we require good to very good written and spoken English skills and the willingness to take part in further training as part of the language courses in German offered internally
