The Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography (IfL) in Leipzig, Germany, offers a two-year postion as an Research Assistant starting 1 January 2022 in the research project "NFDI4Biodiversity, UseCase: Geo-Visualization tools".

The project is located in the research area "Geovisualisations" of the department "Cartography and Visual Communication".

The Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography (IfL) in Leipzig analyses social processes from geographical perspectives and makes social change visible. The IfL is the only non-university research institution for geography in Germany. As a member of the Leibniz Association, the Institute is funded by the Federal Republic of Germany and its states.

The NFDI4Biodiversity consortium is part of the large-scale project "National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI)" funded by the federal and state governments. The consortium comprises 49 partner organisations, including research institutions, professional societies and state offices. Services developed by the consortium are intended to better secure valuable data, organise it and make it usable for third parties.

Within the consortium, the IfL has the task of developing methods for the (interactive) visualisation of differently structured biodiversity data that support their interpretation. It takes into account diverse conservation needs, communication goals and user groups and supports the knowledge transfer of the consortium through digital map-based visualisations.

Your responsibilities

  • Survey and analysis of the requirements and needs of different groups of people for visualisations
  • Conception and further development of visualisation methods for the analysis and presentation of incomplete data sets
  • Development of new visualisation tools, also by means of storytelling, in cooperation with the institutions responsible for the data
  • Conception of visualisation solutions for transfer to different target groups
  • Documentation and research data management according to IfL and project guidelines
  • Presentation and publication of project results at international conferences and in international journals
  • Networking and participation in the NFDI4Biodiversity consortium, support of the IfL project management in communication with project partners

We expect

  • a qualified scientific university degree (Master, Diploma): Cartography, Geomatics, Geoinformation Sciences, Media Design, Digital Humanities or similar. 
  • conceptual and practical knowledge of cartography, geovisualisation and in the field of storytelling
  • knowledge of geoinformatics, especially programming and GIS skills (e.g. php, javascript, css, QGIS, ArcGIS), knowledge of visualisation tools (e.g. leaflet, D3.js), of interfaces and query languages (e.g. SPARQL/GeoSPARQL), of geodatabases (e.g. PostgreSQL, PostGIS)
  • openness for interdisciplinary questions and cooperation; interest in questions of biodiversity research and the visualisation of its data
  • high level of personal commitment and reliability, ability to work independently and to cooperate in interdisciplinary teams; experience in implementing projects is desirable.
  • very good communication skills, excellent written and spoken German and English (as working languages in the consortium)

The fulfilment of the tasks requires meetings with project partners; the willingness to travel is a prerequisite. We expect a committed, independently thinking and acting personality who brings along a high degree of initiative, strength of implementation, team ability as well as willingness to innovate. If desired, participation in academic teaching can be made possible.
