The Herder Institute for Historical Research on East Central Europe – Institute of the Leibniz Association, founded in 1950, is an internationally renowned center of research for East Central Europe with headquarters in Marburg and a satellite office in Giessen. Its main areas of research include history, art history, and digital humanities.

Mainz University of Applied Sciences, School of Engineering, and the Herder Institute are seeking to jointly fill the following qualifying position (Qualifizierungsstelle) for the 2022/2023 winter semester (starting September 1, 2022):

Research and Teaching Professorship (Tandem-Professur) in the field of Applied Computer Science and Visualization in Architecture (m/f/d)

(employment under private law/three-year fixed term).

We provide you with the opportunity to acquire three years of non-university professional experience to qualify for a professorship at a university of applied sciences and agree on an accompanying employee development concept with you. The position includes 50% employment at Mainz University of Applied Sciences (remuneration based on pay grade W 1) and 50% employment at the Herder Institute (pay grade E 14 based on the Hessen Collective Wage Agreement (TV-H)). The professorship will be financed for a limited period of three years by the federal and state program FH-Personal, a funding program for the recruitment and development of professorial staff at universities of applied sciences.

At Mainz University of Applied Sciences, the professorship will oversee and continue to develop the following key areas in particular, both in teaching and in applied research:

  • Digital Planning Survey of Historical Buildings
  • 3D Modeling, (Historic) Building Information Modeling
  • 3D Visualization and Documentation

At the Herder Institute, the position will be incorporated in the Department of Scientific Collections, the working group Digital Documentation and Source Criticism of Cultural Heritage in Eastern Europe, and the long-term project of the digital Dehio of East Central Europe. Here, a hands-on approach to the documentation of cultural heritage buildings and the involvement in the establishment of joint lab components between the Institute of Architecture of Mainz University of Applied Sciences (AI MAINZ) and the Herder Institute will be implemented. First, the joint lab aims to promote application-oriented research in the field of digital documentation of historical buildings, and second, to provide inspiration for practice-oriented teaching. To this end, a workshop format for German-Polish students is to be developed and implemented, among other things. Participation in the Herder Institute Research Academy (HIRA) is expected, as is active support of networking between Mainz University of Applied Sciences and the Herder Institute (including in the acquisition of third-party funding).

The requirements for this teaching and research professorship (Tandem-Professur) are:

  • successful completion of a university degree in architecture, civil engineering, monument preservation, or art history with a specialization in architectural history
  • an aptitude for teaching, separate documentation of which is required
  • and a particular talent for scientific work, usually demonstrated by a qualified doctorate

In addition, we are looking for a candidate with skills in the field of digital examination of existing historical buildings, in particular in surveying, documentation, 3D modeling, and visualization. Relevant teaching experience, experience in research proposals, interest in the activities of the Herder Institute, and the willingness to cooperate with partners in the region of East Central Europe are desired. We also expect the willingness to take on related or cross-curricular teaching subjects and to participate in interdisciplinary projects. The ability and willingness to teach classes in English must be demonstrated in the application and by means of a trial class. The use of digital media in teaching should be a familiar skill.
