The W2-professorship is based at the Department of Statistics within the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Statistics and is linked with the leadership of a research group Computational Statistics & Dynamical Systems for Life Sciences at the Institute of Computational Biology (ICB) at Helmholtz Zentrum München (Helmholtz Munich).
The professorship’s responsibilities include teaching and research in the area of statistical methods and machine learning with applications in the life sciences. Close integration of research topics between Helmholtz Munich and the Department of Statistics at LMU Munich is expected. This includes, in particular, work in modeling biological time series, statistical inference of dynamic systems from biological datasets, and interpretability of these methods.
The professorship is also expected to enhance and expand the teaching program in statistics and data science in the life sciences at LMU Munich. Involvement in the Munich School for Data Science (MUDS) and the Munich Center for Machine Learning (MCML) is expected. Cooperation with the Department’s consulting centers (Statistical Consulting Laboratory, Machine Learning Consulting Unit) is also desired.
LMU Munich and Helmholtz Munich seek to appoint a highly qualified junior academic to this professorship and, therefore, especially encourage early-career scholars to apply. Prerequisites for this position are a university degree and a doctoral degree or a comparable specific qualification. With an excellent record in research and teaching to date, prospective candidates will have demonstrated the potential for an outstanding academic career.
The future holder of this position will be appointed to LMU Munich as a university professor (pay grade W2) under the terms of a private-law contract and will be granted leave of absence in order to be employed by Helmholtz Munich as the head of the research group Computational Statistics & Dynamical Systems for Life Sciences at the ICB.
The initial appointment will be for five years. After a minimum of three years, it can be converted into a permanent position pending a positive evaluation of the candidate’s performance in research and teaching as well as his or her personal aptitude and if all legal conditions are met.
