Offer Description

Open to unconventional approaches in research and teaching, the University of Bremen has preserved its character as a place of short distances for people and ideas since its founding 50 years ago. With a wide range of subjects, it combines exceptional performance and great potential for innovation with a strong orientation towards interdisciplinarity. We firmly stand for the approach of research-based learning and studying. Our 'Bremen Spirit' is expressed in the courage to venture into the new, in a supportive togetherness, in respect and appreciation for each other on an equal footing, as well as in flat hierarchies.

With our academic and research profile, we take on societal responsibility in the region, in Europe, and worldwide. Across all subjects, the UN Sustainable Development Goals and climate justice are particularly important to us in both research and teaching. Around 23,000 individuals learn, teach, research, and work on our international campus. As one of the leading European research universities and part of the YUFE network, we contribute to the advancement of society. We actively foster and shape scientific collaborations globally.

The University of Bremen is seeking to fill a permanent professorship, starting from October 1, 2025, in the Department of Social Sciences at the Institute of Geography:

Professorship (f/m/d) grade W2/W3 (Besoldungsgruppe) as a civil servant for life for the subject area Physical Geography with a Focus on Geomorphology

Reference number: P 516/24

Job description - Position and Candidate Profile

General: We are seeking an individual (f/m/d) with outstanding scientific qualifications in the field of physical geography, particularly in geomorphology. Experience in observational, experimental, and/or theoretical-modeling investigations of processes at the interfaces between land and ocean or land and the cryosphere is expected. If the general civil service requirements are met, permanent civil servant status will be granted. The classification into salary group W2 or W3 will depend on the respective experience in teaching and the successful completion of research projects.

Research: Research foci should encompass the investigation of both direct and indirect anthropogenic influences on geomorphological dynamics at the interfaces between land and ocean (e.g., interactions between sea-level change and coastal processes) or at the interfaces between land and the cryosphere (e.g., impact of permafrost degradation, glacier retreat, or sea ice reduction on geohazards). Utilizing a combination of observational (including remote sensing) or experimental methods with forward-looking (numerical) modeling is desired. Research experience within an international context, accompanied by corresponding publication activity, is expected.

We are seeking a research-oriented individual with national and international connections, possessing strong communication skills, actively seeking collaborations with local research partners in the University of Bremen's focus areas of marine, polar, and climate research (such as MARUM - Center for Marine Environmental Sciences or the Institute for Environmental Physics). Adequate experience in securing third-party funding is required, and a willingness to further acquire external funding is expected.

Moreover, we highly value the willingness to engage in projects with human geography as well as other cultural and social science research partners (e.g., the artec Sustainability Research Center). There is also an opportunity to collaborate with regional research partners such as the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven, the Leibniz Centre for Tropical Marine Research in Bremen, and other partners within the UBremen Research Alliance.

Teaching: The Institute of Geography places great emphasis on providing excellent study conditions through high-quality teaching. The responsibilities include teaching a workload equivalent to 9 teaching hours (LVS) per semester in the German-language Bachelor programs in Geography and the English-language Master's program in Physical Geography. In teaching, the entire spectrum of physical geography with a focus on geomorphology should be represented. It is expected that substantial contributions will be made to advancing the international profile of the English-language Master's program in Physical Geography. Teaching will be conducted in both German and English. If the successful candidate does not have sufficient mastery of German at the time of the appointment, the candidate will be required to learn sufficient German within a two-year period. Engaging the concept of 'research-based learning' and a willingness to undergo further training in higher education didactics are also anticipated.

Requirements for Employment:

Required are a completed academic degree and an outstanding doctorate in a relevant field, further academic achievements (habilitation or habilitation-equivalent) in the field of physical geography, proof of pedagogical aptitude and commitment to teaching. Active promotion of young researchers is also expected, along with experience in academic self-administration. Additionally, a critical reflection on issues of gender equality, diversity, and anti-discrimination in research and teaching is desirable.

The appointment will be made in accordance with § 18 BremHG and § 116 BremBG.

Equal Opportunities:

The University offers a variety of support services for newly appointed individuals (f/m/d), such as a Welcome Center, childcare options, dual career support, as well as professional development and training opportunities. The University aims to increase the proportion of female scientists and therefore strongly encourages female scientists to apply. Applications from scientists with migration backgrounds and international applicants are explicitly welcomed. Applicants with disabilities will be given priority when qualifications are essentially equal.

Application Procedures:

Applications should be written in English and include a letter of motivation, a curriculum vitae with a list of publications, a research and a teaching concept (each approximately 500 words), evidence of teaching qualifications, as well as copies of certificates and diplomas.

Stating the above-mentioned reference number P 516/24, applications should be addressed, and sent by April 8th , 2024 to:
