in the field of

“Epidemiological Methods and Etiological Research”

Grade W3 of the German civil service salary system

in combination with the position of head of department of the same name at the Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology – BIPS. The professor will be selected in a joint appointment procedure of the university and BIPS and the position will start as soon as possible.

Should the general requirements of civil service law be met, the professor will be granted civil servant status for life [Verbeamtung auf Lebenszeit].

The University of Bremen and the Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology – BIPS collaborate successfully in teaching and research. Research activities will be conducted at BIPS and there are attractive opportunities for collaboration in the high-profile area “Health Sciences ” of the University of Bremen, in the Leibniz ScienceCampus “Digital Public Health ”, and within the “U Bremen Research Alliance ”. Strong commitment to the further development of these collaborations is encouraged.

The position requires a team-minded person with leadership skills and an international track record in epidemiological research. In particular, the professor is expected to advance etiological research in interdisciplinary teams based on national and European population-based studies at BIPS. This includes all aspects related to proposing, designing, and conducting respective studies as well as training of junior scientists (PhD students and postdocs). The overall focus of the Department “Epidemiological Methods and Etiological Research” lies on identifying causes of disease at the population level and thus on investigating health risks and factors promoting health over the life course.

The University expects participation in the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs in Public Health and Epidemiology (Department 11), the supervision of final theses, and a strong commitment to the further development of teaching. Regular teaching duties include two hours per week [2 LVS] per semester.

The following requirements must be met for the professorship:

  • A university degree and an outstanding PhD thesis
  • Habilitation or habilitation-equivalent achievements as an epidemiologist, which may also have been obtained in the context of scientific work outside of academia
  • International reputation in the field of epidemiological research
  • Experience in planning, conducting, and analyzing epidemiological studies
  • Experience in leading multidisciplinary research groups
  • Successful acquisition of competitive funding from various third-party funding sources
  • Pedagogical-didactic aptitude and teaching experience in epidemiology at the Bachelor’s and Master’s level.
  • Good written and spoken English (Level C1 CEF - European Framework of Reference for Languages). English-speaking applicants are expected to be willing to learn German within a reasonable period of time.

 

In addition, desirable skills include:

  • Experience in the development and validation of traditional and digital survey instruments
  • Experience in the (digital) collection and quantification of exposures and complex endpoints
  • Experience in incorporating gender and diversity aspects in research, teaching, and leadership.

 

The appointment is based on Section 18 of the Bremen University Act [Bremisches Hochschulgesetz (BremHG)] in conjunction with Section 20 of the Bremen University Act and Section 116 of the Bremen Civil Servants Act [Bremisches Beamtengesetz (BremBG)].
