Job description:

DESY

Plasma accelerators are poised to trigger a revolution in accelerator science. DESY is committed to exploiting the full potential of this cutting-edge technology developing state-of-the-art plasma accelerators for a range of demanding research applications: from compact FEL drivers to energy-efficient synchrotron injectors; from linac energy boosters to plasma-based colliders. DESY is also committed to developing advanced plasma accelerator technology for a wide range of medical and industrial applications. Experimental facilities include the state-of-the-art laser driver KALDERA, the advanced beam-driven facility FLASH Forward, and a host of ancillary research and development laboratories. We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join our vibrant, ambitious and international team. The successful applicant will work on laser-driven plasma acceleration experiments at DESY, with the role focusing on the development of key technologies for multi-GeV plasma accelerators e.g. optical shaping of plasma waveguides, controlled injection, development of novel diagnostics for lasers, plasmas and electrons. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with a diverse team with expertise across a broad range of topics within laser, plasma and accelerator physics and to get involved in unique and novel experiments.

About your role:

  • Design and execute experiments at DESY in the field of laser plasma acceleration
  • Develop novel plasma source technology for multi-GeV electron acceleration
  • Record, analyse and document results for communication through publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at conferences and workshops
  • Contribute to the supervision of students and work closely with other members of the plasma accelerator community at DESY and with external collaborators

About you:

  • PhD in physics or equivalent qualification
  • Background in the field of experimental laser-plasma physics
  • Experience with the operation of high-power femtosecond lasers
  • Experience with the use of plasma waveguides is preferred
  • Working proficiency with a standard scientific programming language (Python/Matlab/C++ etc.)
  • Ability to both work independently and to work as part of a team

Look forward to a unique working environment on our international research campus. Respectful cooperation and the well-being of our DESY employees are particularly important to us. Gender equality is an important aspect for us. To support work life balance we offer flexible working hours, variable part-time, job-sharing models and participation in mobile work (up to 50%). You will benefit from our family-friendly and collegial atmosphere, our established health management and occupational pension provision. As a public funded employer, we offer you a secure workplace and facilitate your individual career with our comprehensive training and development opportunities. Remuneration is according to the regulations of the TV-AVH. DESY offers its employees a financial supplement for a German job ticket at both locations.

We look forward to receiving your application via our application portal:
