Sugar beet is one of Germany’s major arable crops. However, due to growing pest pressure, its cultivation is becoming increasingly difficult. A new bacterial disease known as Syndrome Basse Richesse (SBR) causes decreased sugar contents in beets, resulting in serious yield losses. The native planthopper species Pentastiridius leporinus acts as a vector for the disease and up to date no control measures are available. Furthermore, the planthopper’s biology and ecology are little understood, preventing the fast development of sustainable management options. In a collaborative project with the Julius-Kühn-Institute and the plant breeding industry, we will study the chemical ecology and plant-vector-microbe interactions in this system and aim at identifying resistant plant genotypes. Funding is provided by the German Federal Office of Agriculture and Food.

We are seeking to hire a highly motivated and skilled entomologist with a background in chemical ecology. Candidates must hold an MSc in biology or agricultural sciences. Furthermore, a PhD in entomology or chemical ecology as well as first author publications in Web of Science listed journals are required. The candidate must have experience in insect behaviour and molecular and chemical analytical techniques, such as GC-MS. Solid knowledge in experimental design, statistics, communication skills and scientific writing in English is expected.
