Postdoctoral Researcher (f/m/d) | Physical Properties of MISFIT Compounds and Devices

Updated: about 1 month ago
Location: Dresden, SACHSEN

Job Offer from March 12, 2024

The Department of Topological Quantum Chemistry at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids (MPI CPfS, Dresden), headed by Prof. Dr. Claudia Felser performs cutting-edge research on advanced topological materials, with a focus on both fundamental and application-oriented perspectives.

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented Postdoctoral Researcher (f/m/d) to join our research activities on the fabrication and physical property characterization of misfit-layered transition metal dichalcogenides (MISFIT compounds).

Project overview

This position offers a unique opportunity to explore the intriguing properties of ‘misfit’-layered compounds. While most crystalline solids exhibit three-dimensional periodic arrangements, misfit-layered compounds (MCLs) show physical properties that are largely 2D-like due to weak van der Waals (vdW) interactions along one direction. In this sense, MCLs are vdW heterostructures, displaying properties similar to those typically only observed in artificially-stacked and twisted heterostructures. The primary goal of this project is to investigate the fundamental physical properties of monolayers and multilayers of various MCLs in the form of nanodevices, examining their responses to external perturbations such as magnetic and electric fields, uniaxial stress, and strain.

Requirements
  • PhD degree in physics, material sciences, or related fields, ideally with expertise in micro/nanofabrication
  • Strong experimental skills, particular in micro-nanostructure patterning, photo-lithography, etching and deposition.
  • Hands-on experience in state-of-the-art magneto-transport measurements with MPMS (Magnetic Property Measurement System), and PPMS (Physical Property Measurement system).
  • Outstanding team players who can work in a fast-paced and highly dynamic environment.
  • Good knowledge in spoken and written English (working language at the Institute).

Our offer
  • Conduct experimental research in the area of misfit-layered vdW heterostructure fabrication and characterization.
  • Have access to cutting-edge laboratory facilities, collaborative research opportunities, and a vibrant academic environment.
  • Competitive salary according to the German public pay scale (TVöD). The appointment is for two years (extension possible).
  • The Max Planck Society strives for gender and diversity equality. We welcome applications from all backgrounds.
  • The Max Planck Society is committed to increase the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals.
