The Department of Systemic Cell Biology (Prof. Dr. Bastiaens) at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Physiology in Dortmund is offering a postdoctoral position (physicist) (m/f/d) for reversible cryo-microscopy development to work in an interdisciplinary team for developing reversible ultra-rapid cryo-arrest to follow progression of molecular reaction patterns in living cells.

We have recently developed ultra-rapid cryo-arrest of living cells directly during live-cell fluorescence microscopy (www.science.org/doi/full/10.1126/sciadv.abk0882 ), overcoming fundamental resolution barriers imposed by motional blur and photobleaching.  This allows the imaging of dynamic processes before cryo-arrest in combination with precise determination of native molecular reaction patterns at multiple scales within the same cell under cryo-arrest.

In the advertised project, new photophysical and optical approaches will be developed that will enable the reversibility of the cryo-arrest, to follow reaction progression at multiple time-points in the same cell. This will be used to investigate the spatiotemporal evolution of signaling at hitherto inaccessible scales and precision, which will be used to analyze molecular reaction networks in oncoprotein transformed cells.

For this project, we are looking for enthusiastic, inquisitive and creative team players with a background in advanced microscopy development and photophysics to join our team. Additional experience in laser-beam shaping, biophysics, thermodynamics, fluorescence microscopy and advanced image processing is an asset.

The positions are available immediately and are limited to 3 years with the possibility of prolongation. Financial compensation will be carried out according to the public service remuneration scheme TVöD.
