The Sedimentology and Marine Paleoenvironmental Dynamics Group within the Institute of Earth Sciences, Heidelberg University, invites applications for the following temporary position (full time). Potential starting date is 1st September 2024:

Postdoctoral position in Paleoceanography / Paleoclimatology (f/m/d)

The project is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and aims to decipher the spatial and temporal dynamics of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), especially with regard to the influence of future global warming scenarios, characterized by elevated greenhouse gas concentrations and reduced continental ice volumes. For this purpose, the applicant will interpret proxy-based marine sea surface temperature records from Equatorial Pacific drill cores, covering the mid-to-late Pleistocene as well as early Pliocene.

Your duties:

  • Interpretation of proxy-based temperature data from the equatorial Pacific with regards to different ENSO states over the Plio-Pleistocene
  • To a smaller extend: generation of proxy data
  • Publication of the results in an international peer-reviewed journal, participation at conferences

Your profile:

  • PhD in geosciences or a closely related discipline
  • Strong background in paleoceanography and paleoclimatology
  • Experience in numerical modeling would be a beneficial asset
  • Written and spoken fluency in English
  • Demonstrated publication activity in peer-reviewed international journals

The salary is based on TV-L E13. The position is limited to 12 months.
