The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics as an institute of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science (registered association) is the largest centre for fusion research in Europe with about 1100 employees in Garching near Munich and Greifswald. The scientists are investigating the physical principles for a fusion power plant which - like the sun - generates energy from the fusion of light atomic nuclei. The research is carried out in seven experimental and theoretical projects aimed at developing nuclear fusion into an inexhaustible and safe source of energy for the future.

The Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Garching offers within the division "Plasma Edge and Wall" (E2M) a position for a Postdoctoral experimental physicist (m/f/d)


Your tasks
  • Construction and commissioning of a femtosecond laser system for depth profiling of hydrogen in metals
  • Optimization of the diagnosis of released hydrogen using mass spectroscopy
  • Characterization of the treated surfaces with scanning electron microscopy
  • Study of hydrogen retention in tungsten

Your profile
  • PhD in experimental physics
  • Good knowledge of plasma-material interaction
  • Good knowledge of handling and using ultrashort pulse lasers
  • Knowledge of metallography and surface diagnostics

Your abilities
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Independent goal-oriented way of working
  • Ability to present complex scientific and technical issues verbally and in writing
  • Willingness to work and experience in international projects

The full-time position starts as soon as possible and is limited to a duration of two years. The salary is based on the assignment of tasks and qualifications and goes up to pay group E13 according to the collective agreement for the public sector (TVöD Bund).
