We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral scientist (f/m/x) to join the Schiller lab (https://twitter.com/SchillerLab ; Pubmed: Schiller HB)at theInstitute of Lung Health and Immunity / Comprehensive Pneumology Center.

Background

At birth, the newborn's immune system is suddenly exposed to microorganisms, food and numerous other environmental influences. How do the infants‘ immune cells prepare for this moment during pregnancy and birth? How do external influences and genetic factors interact to shape the immune system during the first weeks of life? And what are the consequences of disruptive events, such as premature birth or neonatal infections?

In the context of the transregional Collaborative Research Center, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) PILOT (TRR 359 “Perinatal Development of Immune Cell Topology”), we are aiming to analyze immune cell trajectories defining early lung development in newborn infants (https://www.perinatal-immunity.de/en/project/a08 ).

In addition, in the context of a CZI funded consortium we are currently using spatial proteomics to map tissue niches in postnatal development of the human lung.

Your tasks
  • Longitudinal single cell transcriptomics of cells from neonate respiratory fluids and blood
  • Analysis and biological interpretation of results
  • Close collaboration with computational biologists on analysis of multimodal data for integration of single cell analysis from respiratory fluids with in situ experiments in FFPE tissue specimens (multiplexed IF and spatial omics)
  • Hypothesis generation and functional interrogations in organoid models
  • Daily supervision of graduate and undergraduate students and lab technicians
  • Project team management and scientific paper writing

Your profile
  • PhD degree in the life sciences or a related field
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English, excellent interpersonal and analytical skills
  • Expertise in lung development and/or immunology is beneficial
  • Expertise in (single cell) omics techniques, systems biology and basic bioinformatic data analysis (R/Python) is beneficial
  • Prior experience with complex ex vivo models (e.g. organoids) is beneficial
