Postdoc position (tenure track) in the department of physical oceanography and instrumentation

In case of best fulfilment of the requirements (especially scientific performance (publications and other scientific achievements), experiences in other institutes and abroad, positive external review) an immediate permanent position is possible. Otherwise, a tenure-track procedure (up to 3 years with extension option up to 5 years) is intended to develop the missing competencies. The prerequisite for this is, that qualification times according to § 2 WissZeitVG are still available or a temporary employment based on § 14 Abs. 2 TzBfG is possible.

Remuneration is paid in accordance with the “Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst der Länder” (TV-L) salary scale at level EG 13.

The position might be part-time.

Who are we?

The IOW is an independent research institute of the Leibniz Association for which equal opportunities, family friendliness and work-life balance are very important. The staff of the four sections Physical Oceanography and Instrumentation, Marine Chemistry, Biological Oceanography and Marine Geology works interdisciplinary within a joint research programme.

What will be your tasks?

In close collaboration with other scientists and scientific programmers at the department, the IOW Regional Climate System Model (IOW-RCSM) for the Baltic Sea region will be further developed and applied for long-term simulations. The objective is to examine how the physical processes have changed in coastal and marginal seas like the Baltic Sea in the course of decades to millennia. The information about past long-term changes from long-term observations and model simulations will be used to develop plausible scenario simulations for the future of the Baltic Sea and other coastal and marginal seas. Especially the question how coastal and marginal seas may react on anthropogenic climate change and other human influences such as eutrophication shall be addressed.

Since the influence of the atmosphere is of great importance for the changes in shallow coastal and marginal seas such as the Baltic Sea, the jobholder will strengthen the IOW team with her/his expertise in atmospheric processes and evaluate and improve the IOW-RCSM. Furthermore, the jobholder will conduct research in particular on the exchange fluxes between atmosphere, sea ice and ocean, on the influence of the large-scale circulation on the Baltic Sea region and on climate change in the Baltic Sea region. In addition, studies on changes in extreme value events, ensemble studies on the uncertainty assessment of projections with coupled models and climate impact research for the Baltic Sea and other coastal and marginal seas shall be carried out.

You will publish your findings in scientific publications and present them at national and international conferences.

What do we expect from you?

You have a researcher personality, and your desire to understand our environment is driven by scientific curiosity. Applicants must have a university degree (master/diploma) and a PhD in meteorology, oceanography or a related natural or geoscientific discipline with pronounced physical-mathematical components. The ability to work scientifically independent in a team and the willingness to carry out science related to the novel IOW research programme 2024-2033 are mandatory. Scientists who have recently completed a PhD thesis with excellent results (summa cum laude), have experience outside of IOW and meet the requirements listed above are particularly encouraged to apply. In this case, the quality of the publications submitted to fulfill the PhD thesis requirements will be evaluated as one of the criteria during the selection process.
