Postdoc (m, w, div) ultrafine particle (UFP) chemical composition

Updated: 2 months ago

The Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research is a research institute of the Leibniz Association and an internationally renowned institute in the field of aerosol and cloud research.

The Atmospheric Chemistry Department (ACD) undertakes world-leading studies in multiphase atmospheric chemistry including air quality related topics. We are looking for a motivated and productive postdoc to work on the chemical composition of ultrafine particles (UFP) in ambient air. A focus will be on a project in the area of Frankfurt international airport, where airport-related sources of UFP are to be characterized.

Main Tasks:

  • Conduct field campaigns in Frankfurt/Main and at other places to sample UFP with dedicated instrumentation (cascade impactors)
  • Develop and optimize analytical methods to determine chemical UFP constituents from very low amounts of available UFP mass, using offline chromatographic instrumentation, i.e. IC, LC/MS, and GC/MS
  • Apply the developed methods to analyze samples from Frankfurt and other areas
  • Apportion sources of UFPs based on their chemical composition
  • Interact with the project consortium, take part in meetings and discussions
  • Write project reports, present the results at scientific international conferences, and publish results in scientific journals

Requirements and Skills:

  • At least a Master's or a PhD degree in chemistry, environmental sciences, meteorological sciences or related disciplines
  • Expertise and experience in aerosol chemistry, ideally with a focus on ultrafine particles
  • Expertise and experience in instrumental analytical chemistry, especially chromatography
  • High intrinsic motivation, ability to work both independently and as well as part of a team
  • Very good conduct of the English language
  • Very good paper writing skills
  • For any questions, feel free to contact Dr. Dominik van Pinxteren (dominik(at)tropos.de ) or Prof. Dr. Hartmut Herrmann (herrmann(at)tropos.de )

We offer:

  • The opportunity to work in the Atmospheric Chemistry Department (ACD) of TROPOS, a vibrant internationally active and internationally composed team of atmospheric chemists who will support you in further developing your career
  • Fixed-term contract of 1 year based on TV-L. Exciting potential development perspectives in atmospheric chemistry
  • An exciting workplace in the lively city of Leipzig with a multifaceted job in an interdisciplinary work environment and a variety of work-life balance offers as well as flexible working hours and daycare facilities

TROPOS and TROPOS ACD value the diversity of its employees and pursue the goals of equal opportunity. The institute with its departments aim to increase the proportion of women in research and therefore encourages qualified women to apply. People with severe disabilities have priority in hiring if they have the same aptitude, ability, and professional qualifications.
