Postdoc in Quantum Imaging as Scientific Researcher (IOF-2023-78)

Updated: 3 months ago
Location: Jena, TH RINGEN

The Fraunhofer - Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF in Jena conducts applied research in the field of photonics and develops innovative optical systems to control light - from its generation and manipulation to its application. The services offered by the institute cover the entire photonic process chain ranging from opto-mechanical and opto-electronical system design to the manufacturing of customer-specific solutions and prototypes.

We are looking for a postdoc for the department »Emerging Technologies« to work on research topics in the field of quantum imaging, in the group led by Dr. Valerio Gili.

The group focuses on the development of quantum imaging components and systems. As a branch of quantum optics, the ultimate performance limits of optical imaging made possible by the laws of quantum mechanics are explored. Using the methods and techniques of quantum optics, the group addresses issues of imaging, processing, and detection with sensitivity and resolution. Quantum mechanically entangled light particles overcome the limitations of classical optics and allow insights into previously invisible wavelength ranges. Thus, they offer new possibilities for imaging techniques, microscopy, and spectroscopy. The long-term challenge is to explore these possibilities and to develop technological solutions for research and industry.

What you will do

  • Acquisition and processing of projects from public and industrial clients
  • Independent design and practical realization of quantum imaging optical systems as well as scientific data analysis
  • Carrying out  literature search (publications, patent searches)
  • Documentation and presentation of research results at national and international conferences
  • Supervision and guidance of scientific and technical staff in different projects
  • Supervision of student theses

What you bring to the table

  • Successfully completed Master and PhD in physics, engineering, or a related field
  • Theoretical and experimental experience in optics and quantum technologies
  • Experience in independently writing project proposals, and scientific literature
  • Demonstrated experience in project management of interdisciplinary teams
  • Knowledge in building new optical/quantum optical systems for different applications
  • Very good knowledge of German and English
  • Leadership and teamwork skills as well as a high degree of independence and determination

What you can expect

  • Working in a collegial, open-minded team at a well-equipped workplace
  • Personal and professional development opportunities in challenging R&D projects
  • Networking with leading industry partners and research groups
  • Access to state-of-the-art R&D infrastructure e.g., fiber and laser technology, micro- and nanostructure technology, surface functionalization (very well-equipped optics labs)
  • Flexible working hours and a family-friendly workplace

The weekly working time is 39 hours. This position is also available on a part-time basis. We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Appointment, remuneration and social security benefits based on the public-sector collective wage agreement (TVöD). Additionally Fraunhofer may grant performance-based variable remuneration components.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process.
