GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the leading particle accelerators for science. In the next few years, the new FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) one of the world’s largest research projects, will be built in international cooperation. GSI and FAIR offer the opportunity to work together in this international environment with a team of employees committed to ensure each day to conduct world-class science.

Neutrino group at the Institute of Nuclear Physics 2 was established in November 2015. Since then it has grown to a dynamic and international group of more than 10 young people. The group is specialized in the neutrino physics with liquid scintillator-based detectors. The group members are involved in the data analysis of the Borexino experiment in Italy and in various activities regarding the Jiangmen Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) in China. JUNO is going to be the first multi-kton liquid scintillator detector ever built. The main physics goal is the determination of neutrino mass hierarchy, one of the key open questions in the present-day neutrino physics. JUNO is planned to be completed by the end of 2022.

We are looking for a highly motivated postdoc to join our efforts in the JUNO data analysis:

Postdoc in Experimental Neutrino Physics (all genders)

The main focus will be the measurement of neutrino mass hierarchy, however further topics include atmospheric, solar, and geoneutrinos. The work will cover sensitivity studies based on the Monte Carlo simulation using official JUNO software. Once JUNO will start taking the first real data, the focus will be to understand the detector performance and its background levels and to perform the first physics analysis.

Your tasks:

  • Understanding and development of the JUNO simulation and event reconstruction software
  • Sensitivity studies for various physics goals of JUNO with focus on the neutrino mass hierarchy
  • Understanding performance of the JUNO detector
  • Physics analysis of JUNO data
  • Co-supervision of master and PhD students involved in the JUNO analysis
  • Participation and presentation of progress reports at the JUNO collaboration meetings in China and in several European countries
  • Disseminate world-class research via publications and conference presentations
  • Help with organizational and teaching activities
  • Participation at the JUNO data-taking shifts

Your Qualification:

  • PhD degree in experimental physics
  • Experience in neutrino physics
  • Programing skills in C++, Python, Root
  • Experience in data analysis
  • Very good command of written and spoken English
  • Initiative character, creativity, good interpersonal, communication and presentation skills, result orientation and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to coordinate work of several persons
  • Availability to travel regularly to China and to work in the Jiangmen underground laboratory

We offer a fixed-term 3-year postdoc position in an internationally renowned research institute with a Membership in the JUNO collaboration, flexible working hours and various opportunities to reconcile work and private life. The salary is based on the German civil service employees (Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst - TVöD (Bund)).
