Job description:The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national centre for geosphere research. As a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres we are part of the largest scientific organization in Germany. For section 3.7 Geomicrobiology (department “Geochemistry”), we are looking for a:

We seek to hire a postdoc in peatland microbiome and biogeochemistry research as part of the EU BIODIVERSA project MiDiPeat. The overarching aim of MiDiPeat is to develop monitoring of peatland microbial diversity across land use categories by establishing links between key microbiome functions, plant community characteristics, peat biochemistry and GHG fluxes. The postdoc will work in the “Microbial Carbon Cycling in the Climate System” group of Susanne Liebner affiliated with Section Geomicrobiology at the GFZ in strong collaboration with LUKE (National Resources Institute Finland), University of Tartu (Estonia), and University of South Bohemia in České Budejovice (Czech Republic). 


Your responsibilities:
  • Design and conduct molecular and biogeochemical lab work including -omics, quantitative PCR, IC, GC and HPLC
  • Plan, coordinate and conduct campaign-based field work (soils and pore-water sampling, recording of meta-data) primarily in peatlands of northern Germany
  • Set up and run microbial incubations using an in-house Picarro analyzer
  • Perform multivariate statistical analysis using genomic and environmental data
  • Publication and presentation of scientific output in international journals, reports and public formats
  • Contribute to outreach activities and supervision of students

Your qualifications:

Candidates are expected to have a strong background and interests in a combination of the following topics:

  • Master`s degree (or equivalent) and a PhD in microbial ecology, biochemistry, bioinformatics or related fields
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Profound experience in peatland biogeochemistry and soil microbial ecology
  • Strong publication record 
  • Experience in both field and lab work 
  • Experience in microbial downstream analyses ideally including analyses and interpretation of NGS data
  • Interest in supervision and proposal writing
  • Intention to develop as a researcher
  • Fluency in English

Start date: 1st of April 2024 at the earliest / 1st of June 2024 at the latest (subject to final approval)
Fixed-term: 25 months
Salary: The position is classed as salary group 13 according to “TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)”. The salary group is determined on the basis of the Collective Wage Agreement and the respective personal qualifications.
Working hours: Full-time (currently 39 h/week); The position is generally suitable for part-time work.
