Job description:The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam – GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national centre for geosphere research. As a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres we are part of the largest scientific organization in Germany. With approximately 1,500 employees our key mission is to secure a profound understanding of the systems and processes of solid Earth, to develop strategies and options for action in addressing global change and its impacts on a regional level, to understand natural hazards and to minimize associated risks, to ensure the sustainable provision of energy and raw materials for a high-tech society and to evaluate the influence of human activity on system Earth. For section 2.2 Geophysikalische Abbildung des Untergrunds (department “Geophysics”), we are looking for a:
Reference Number 9182
The combination of Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) deployed on existing fiber-optic networks (dark fibers) with interferometric analysis of high-frequency, human-generated ambient seismic noise is becoming an attractive tool for subsurface imaging and monitoring in urban environments. Yet, this approach remains vastly underutilized, mostly due to the lack of adequate and efficient data exploration and processing tools to properly manage, evaluate, and exploit these rich datasets.
We are seeking a team member to develop and validate new processing tools to extract usable ambient seismic noise signals from large-volume DAS ambient noise datasets recorded in urban areas. You will develop efficient data quality control (QC) and processing tools that combine advanced array seismic processing routines, machine learning (ML) approaches, and High-Performance Computing (HPC) to fully exploit the high spatial and temporal coherence provided by DAS data. This work will be conducted within the Helmholtz-funded project InDySE (Interrogating the Dynamic Shallow Earth).
Your responsibilities:
- Explore the characteristics of urban DAS seismic noise datasets, and identify algorithms and HPC approaches that can be implemented to extract coherent seismic energy
- Build, implement, and validate processing workflows and ML algorithms on existing and newly acquired urban noise DAS dataset
- Explore the potential of the processing framework to be used “on the edge” of DAS units in field experiments
- Publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present at meetings and international conferences
- Contribute to the supervision of master’s and PhD students
Your qualifications:
- Master's degree (or equivalent) and PhD in Geophysics (preferred), Physics, or Computer Science
- Knowledge of Seismology; experience in the field of seismic noise preferred but not required
- Knowledge and prior experience working with DAS data is advantageous but not required
- Excellent computational and scientific programming skills (Python, Matlab, C, C++…)
- Experience with parallel computing and HPC is preferred
- Good communication skills and good command of written and spoken English
Start date: 01/07/2024
Fixed-term: 36 months
Salary: The position is classed as salary group 13 according to “TVöD Bund (Tarifgebiet Ost)”. The salary group is determined on the basis of the Collective Wage Agreement and the respective personal qualifications.
Working hours: Full-time (currently 39 h/week); The position is generally suitable for part-time work.
Place of work: Potsdam
What we offer:
- Ambitious and varied tasks in a dynamic and international research environment
- State-of-the-art equipment
- Public service benefits
- Extensive training opportunities
- Professional career advice offered by our in-house Career Centre
- Flexible working hours and conditions
- Support with finding a good work-life balance offered by benefit@work
- Institute day-care centre on site
- Working at the Albert Einstein science park on the Telegrafenberg in Potsdam
- Work place within walking distance of Potsdam main train station or just a short ride on the shuttle bus
