Postdoc (f/m/d)
specialization in meteorology, physics or computer science
Job description

The atmospheric model system ICON is used for weather forecasting as well as for climate projections. KIT is one of four partners further developing the ICON model system. Within this ICON consortium, KIT is responsible for the development of modules for aerosols and atmospheric trace substances.
You will be responsible for the conceptual design of the modules for atmospheric chemical processes and for the model infrastructure. By doing so, you will take over the so-called gatekeeping function for the institute within the ICON consortium. You will check the above-mentioned extensions for content, numerical and formal correctness, robustness and scalability. Furthermore, the development of efficient computational methods in atmospheric chemical modelling as well as workflows for the pre-processing of boundary and initialisation data, the model simulation itself and the post-processing of the model output belong to your field of activity. You will publish your research results in relevant journals and present them at national and international conferences. Your job profile is supplemented by the scientific supervision of students and doctoral candidates.

Personal qualification

You have a university degree (Diploma (University) / Master) in meteorology, physics or computer science, in each case with a completed doctorate and several years of professional experience in the field of scientific computing, scientific software development, in dealing with version control systems, in the field of continuous integration as well as in project management. We expect you to have excellent programming skills (e.g. Fortran, python) in a Linux/Unix environment on high-performance computing systems, extensive experience in documenting scientific and technical developments and results, and a basic understanding of the climate system. Knowledge of atmospheric physics and chemistry is an advantage.
