The ZBW – Leibniz Information Centre for Economics is a research-based information infrastructure for economics and is a member of the Leibniz Association. The institution is one of the largest of its kind in the world and accommodates more than 4 million media units. It also provides access to approximately 2.2 million digital full texts. The ZBW is scientifically affiliated to the University of Kiel, Christian Albrecht University (CAU). The research of the ZBW in computer science focuses especially on the research fields of Web Science, Digital Information Infrastructures and Information Retrieval.

We are looking for a

Post-Doctoral Researcher (f/m/d)

to join our interdisciplinary team of researchers at the Web Science Research Group in Kiel. The position start date is negotiable but aims for the earliest data possible.

Remuneration is based on the public sector pay scale TV-L at grade EG 13 TV-L, with corresponding qualifications EG 14 TV-L (full-time, currently 38.7 hours/week). According to § 2 section 2 of the federal law of Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (WissZeitVG, the contract will be fixed-term until 31.10.2024 according to the project period.

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to VOICES, a 2.5-year project funded by the The Trans-Atlantic Platform for Social Sciences and Humanities (T-AP) examining the Value of Openness, Inclusion, Communication, and Engagement for Science in a Post-Pandemic World (VOICES).

The VOICES project seeks to investigate and share new empirical evidence of the value of opening science, to other scholars and to the public, during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.

Your tasks in VOICES

  • Research in and application of bibliometric methods in VOICES’ work package 2 “Quantitative evidence about the extent of inclusivity and diversity due to the open of science” – which includes collection of bibliometric and altmetric data (via different APIs) and statistical analyses
  • Examination and analysis of focus group interviews at German institutions focusing on scholarly and science communication
  • Theorization of research findings, e.g. regarding the role of open science for inclusion and equity in scholarly and science communication
  • Presentation of project outcomes at conferences, in journals and other relevant scholarly outlets, incl. research data management and publication
  • Community building

In addition to relevant research interests and experience, successful applicants will have the following qualifications:

  • Completed studies and PhD in one of the following or related disciplines: computer science, information science, science studies, social sciences or economics
  • Three years of professional experience in scholarly communication, science studies or related fields
  • Demonstrated experience with bibliometric studies and/or data mining of social media
  • Excellent programming and database skills (preferably Python/R and SQL)
  • Knowledge, interest, or experience in open science, bibliometrics, scholarly communication and related fields
  • Statistical skills
  • Fluency in English, both written and verbal
  • Demonstrated experience with scholarly writing, e.g. publications in scholarly outlets

In addition to these recommended qualifications, the following characteristics and skills will be an asset in this position:

  • Experience with research projects
  • Knowledge of and experience with empirical social research methods
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a diverse team
  • Fluency in German (written and verbal)
