The Institute for Sociology and Social Psychology (ISS) at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Cologne is one of the largest and best-known social science institutes in Germany. Today, more than 100 academic and non-academic staff members are working at the ISS ( ).


  • Teaching 4 SWS (2 courses) per semester in the study programs of the department. The courses will contribute to the teaching portfolio of the Chair of Methods of Empirical Social Research (Prof. Thomas Leopold).
  • Research in the field(s) of demography, social inequality, life course, family.
  • Optional: Collaborate with the KINMATRIX team (ERC StG 2019)


  • Completed PhD (or close to completion) in sociology, demography, psychology, statistics, or a closely allied discipline.
  • Good publication record relative to career stage.
  • Good knowledge of advanced quantitative methods and good skills in Stata/R/etc.
  • Experience with the analysis of complex data.
  • Commitment to open science.

The position is available from 01.08.2021 on a full-time basis. It is limited to 36 months, with the possibility of extension. If the applicant meets the relevant wage requirements and personal qualifications, the salary is based on remuneration group 13 TV-L of the pay scale for the German public sector.
