The mission of the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) as a nationally and internationally active research institute is to deliver solutions for an ecologically, economically and socially sustainable agriculture – together with society. ZALF is a member of the Leibniz Association and is located in Müncheberg (approx. 35 minutes by regional train from Berlin-Lichtenberg). The institute also maintains locations in Dedelow and Paulinenaue.

The EU project “Valorizing and balancing the ecosystem service benefits offered by legumes, and legume-based cropped systems (LegumES)” develops fully inclusive multiactor driven solutions. It delivers practical methodologies and tools to realize diversified legume-based cropping systems in Europe. The project will quantify the environmental benefits of legume-based production and explore, how these may be best-balanced with economic consequences of alternative land use scenarios. LegumES will diversify research to include crops, ecosystem services, contexts, and scales not yet well studied, to provide the agroecological knowledge-base farmers need to amplify their potential benefits. ZALF will lead the agro-economic assessment of current and legume-based farming systems across Europe, work with innovative pilot studies in Brandenburg and support the agronomic evaluation of legumes, based on long term studies.
